Well i go to play KZ-2 tonight and an read disc error pops up on the screen (don't remember wich one) so i eject the game put it back in and the loading symbol comes on in the upper right hand conner but nothing happens. I tried a bluray, and dvd and another game and the symbol saying there is a disc in doesnt show up for any them. Ive read the other post about this problem and i have come to the conclusion its an optical drive failure. My problem is i purchased my 40g ps3 back on 11/24/07 so its out of warranty and i dont think i have the receipt. i was wonder if anybody else has had the out of warranty and no receipt issue. About a month ago my HP laptop broke and i did some research finding out that there were alot of people have the same issues with this model and HP was fixing them out of warranty free you just had to know you needed to talk to a case manger wich i found out about and next thing you know i had some one that wasnt in india on the phone and prepaid box the next day. Im gonna be really pissed if they dont fix it i lucky have another ps3 in the living room i can use as a spare. I help sell their products everyday and i always have good things to say about the ps3 and what an awsome piece of machinery they have made. I hope i can keep sayin good things about them. My ps3 was manufactured in september 07 so im thinkning it falls into the time frame of everybody else's 40 gigs that failed. Anywho any comments or suggestion would be greatly apperciated.

Sony will fix it for $149. Alternatively, you could go on ebay and buy a blu-ray drive and do the replacement yourself.

You really only have 3 options

1. new PS3
2. try and fix it yourself
3. pay $149 and have Sony fix it

There is no way around it. It sucks yes, but that's the way it is. And don't try to fight with C/S... put it this way, I had similar dead BD drive in my 40gb, which so happened to be within the 1 year of 40gb's launch and they refused to accept my warranty claim without a receipt. No problem. I received my PS3 full of pry marks and many scratch marks all over the shiny housing. Guess where my complaints lead to on this? Nowhere. No response, no callback, no apology, nothing.

You are out of warranty. Sadly you can only make a choice on the 3 options above.

I did the same **** when my 360 messed up instead of the 100+ dollars they only charged me 59 I think. then I got a check a month or 2 later cuz Microsoft said it was there fault.

It definitely isn't as bad as the RROD, but it is pretty bad. And it seems to be happening more and more frequently these days. It makes me think that the MTBF of these blue lasers is not all that long. :(
