Will it transcode .wtv files yet?

Mr. Abulia 03-12-09, 10:38 PM Question: has anyone tried using the linux version on a d-link dns-323? I'm having hella problems with the 323's built-in DLNA server: the PS3 won't see file sizes over 4GB and regular divx and xvid avi encoded files keep having the sound cut out on them (720p MKVs remuxxed into mpg files: no problem! Lower bitrate .avi files? Sound cuts out. WTF?!)

I didn't think that the DLink DNS-323 was DLNA certified? I just though that it was UPnP?
I sold mine and bought a Promise NS2300N (http://www.promise.com/product/product_detail_eng.asp?product_id=198) instead.

I'm not sure... The tab for the server does call it UPnP, but it other places I've seen it referred to as DLNA. In any case, it does stream to the PS3 (with a few limitations). BUT, this PS3 media Server is a heck of a lot better!
I've been thinking of dumping the DNS and just keeping my desktop on all the time, but then I'm wasting a lot more power... and risking performance issues when other programs start doing a lot of disk access :(
How is the Promise?

How is the Promise?
I used to be a Senior Engineer for an IT company. The firm I used to work for, now recommend the Promise NAS devices as an archive device.
They trialed many SOHO type units and found that the performance for most was "below par". However the Promise was clear ahead of the rest. From what I understand, it's because most are basically using software-RAID whereas the Promise doesn't.
I used to own a DNS-323 myself, but sold it to upgrade to the Promise NS2300N, since it was DLNA certified and I wanted to use it with my PS3 and my receiver, both of which are DLNA certified as well.
I find the promise NS2300N to be a lot "snappier" than what my DNS-323 ever was. However I must admit, I had issues with my D-Link NAS that friends of mine, who also had a 323, never had!? Whether I just had a dodgy unit, I don't know.
In respect to the DLNA functionality on the Promise NS2300N, until very recently, the Promise DLNA plugin was a complete load of crap. They have just released (or are about too - I have an "advance copy") a new DLNA plugin, which works like a dream.
To read my "drama" on this issue and me having to fight Promise to get them to acknowledge that their DLNA plugin was to blame and not my setup, check out the following thread on the offciial PS3 forums:
http://community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message?board.id=bANZ_announcements_help&thread.id=1552
So, at this point of time, I am pretty confident in recommending one. My only suggestion, if you can afford it, purchase the NS4300N. Even if you don't want/need a 4x HDD solution, it has a slightly bigger processor - not by much - but the extra performance is there.
Cheers,
BuckoNZ
Mr. Abulia 03-13-09, 12:53 PM Thanks BuckoNZ. I'll try and see if I can find a Promise at a local merchant so I can try it out. It sounds "promising". I have to admit, the performance of the DNS-323 is not what I would call "snappy", but it will be good enough to give to my parents as a backup solution...
Do you know when the new DNLA plug-in will be released to the public? Even better, can we get this PS3 AV server to run on the Promise as well? :)

There is a guy here called 'PromiseNASDude' and he works for Promise. According to him, it was to be up on their website by the end of this week. I have it hosted on my own site (you can find the link on the NS4300N thread here - or on the PS3 thread I have already supplied you), but he wanted me to take it down. As I know Promise are VERY slack (1 week = 2 months), I won't take it down until it does.
Just checked the official NS2300N & NS4300N download sites and it's not posted. Surprise, surprise.
In respect to this server running on the Promise NAS devices... no chance. It will never happen.
Dr_EluSivE 03-14-09, 06:12 PM I was having trouble getting it to stream Media From SMB network shares (Tversity does this fine) Does anyone else have this problem? Is it fixed in this version?
bryansj 03-14-09, 10:28 PM I considered a DLink DNS-323 to replace my Linksys NSLU2, but decided against it and build my own solution from a MSI Wind PC, 2GB RAM, and 1TB HDD. Threw PS3 Media Server on it and it just works. Solved my other fileshare issues as well. Quite, low power usage, has enough power for 720P transcoding (maybe 1080P too).
