Let me start by saying, ANY AND ALL COMMENTS ARE WELCOMED !!!!

I thought it was time to share my "functional" home theater ... I'm on the east coast of Canada, so MANY cold night here, which lends it's hand well to lots of Movie watching.

We built a new home about 1 year ago, and the Theater room was constructed and wired at that time. We put a bar in the room as well, to help make the room a little more functional, as opposed to theater only. The room is approx. 600 sq ft in total. the perfect size.

I have recently built and installed acoustical treatments, and I have to say the sound is much more enjoyable now ... Both the Projector throw distance and seating distance are "optimal" for the room. The picture is outstanding and leaves a lot of people "shocked" at how crisp and clear it really is. I've considered theater seating as I have the room, but I find the couch/love seat MUCH more functional ... especially with kids & German Shepherd :)

The ceiling is "Flat Black" and the walls are non-reflective Benjamin Moore Paint (Barnboard color)

Equipment List:
Epson Home Cinema 720 Projector (waiting for 1080p to drop more in price)
130" - Goo Systems Screen (Digital Gray Light)

Oppo DVD Player
Digital Cable PVR (Rogers)
Nintendo Wii & Sony PS3
Polk DSW PRO 400 Sub (for sale)
Polk RTi8 Front Speakers
Polk CSi A6 Center Speaker
Polk FXi A4 Surround Speakers

I snapped the pictures rather quickly, so they are not the best. But I think you will get the general idea of the room.

The pictures do not do the room any justice at all... One of those "Have to see" or be in it things :) :)

Thanks for peeking.

Nice. What are the details of the panels on either side?

Do you realize that you'll get more out of your sub almost anywhere else ...

I have another thread on the panels I built here:

As for the Sub, I know :) I'm going to sell this one, which is great, but a tad small for the room (8") Just started researching 10's & 12's and once I find something I like, I will get a new Sub.

And, I WILL place it elsewhere, promise :)

Here I am surfing the forums and find that there's a ht about 10 minutes up the road from me :) Just wanted to say hi from Rothesay Avenue. I live in F'ton but come down a few times a week for work.

So as everyone can see, my Sub placement, well, sucks :)

Any thoughts around me placing it behind the bar, in the corner? I will certainly try it to check out the sound, but wondering if placing it out of the main room, and into that little "L", and behind the bar, is a step backwards.

Thoughts ?

wondering if placing it out of the main room, and into that little "L", and behind the bar, is a step backwards. It would be better than where it is and ought to work fine. Also try the front wall below the screen or the rear right corner (if it will fit).

Use the old trick ... put the sub in your listening position then crawl around on your hands and knees. Where it is loudest is where it should go.

I'd come and help but I am 3,203 klicks up the road. :p

While I think the my theater is great and all, not sure that a 32 hour drive each way makes since to help me move a sub  However, It is the thought that counts!

Thanks for the suggestions.

The bad thing about subs "bass"...IS, its always 9/10 times going to sound good in a corner. BUT most of the time the bass stays in the corner, then travels to another corner leaving dead space all around the rest of the room.

OR so this is what I have always gotten. All corners in room sound awesome...rest of the room sounds dead like there is no bass at all...

This is why im running 3 subs. 2 12"s and 1 15"...I know some of you dont run different subs or different sizes but thats what I have...I have the 15 and one 12 back here where I sit...And the other 12 is up in front by my screen.

IT sounds a little better but still...I cant believe I get dead space in my room..Im sure most people have this problem. Dont know how to resolve it so its perfect unless you get about 9 subs...2 on each of my 4 walls then one right in the middle..lol..

Hey! I thought I was the only one crazy for HT in the area! I live off Redhead Rd. in Saint John!

We just bought our house this year and I am gearing up for the HT Room - the rest of the basement came first.

I would love to come check it out some day - it may help convince the wife on some things!

How much are you asking on the sub?

htCanada

Thanks ... Anytime your more than welcome !

Just shot you a PM on the sub.

David

P.S. - There are LOTS of HT's around SJ ... I've helped install 5 of them for friends, so I know they exist :)

Well, that's really good to hear.

Where are people finding construction supplies? Such as the smurf tubing, accoustic fabrics, and accoustic insulations?

htCanada

Well, thats a tough one around here .... Fabricville have some acoustic fabric (gnerally only Black in stock), I order a LOT of my stuff on the Internet which seems to be the best way to get what you need. Just look for deals. I spent 6 months gathering up everything I needed ....

Drop by sometime, and I can give you some ideas. Always ways to improvise without causing negative effects :)

You need only 2 sub to fill the room. Position them on the side walls with equal distance to the listening position. They will fill the room with no dead area provide they're rated high enough for the room size.

Altho this is not practical.

Hey David, Thats a lovely room you got there. Few things i would like to do: move the fronts abit forward and toward the center. Also having 2 acoustic panels behind them.

As for the sub, i would save and get 2 sub and place them right besides the center speaker. Oh i would paint the baseboard with a same color family of the wall.

Since you got space behind the back seat. I would move up to 7.1

May want to add corner bass traps in addition to what was mentioned above by moving the mains forward and adding panels behind them

Take a look up , I do have corner Bass traps :) I need to add a couple behind the bar, but otherwise the room is covered.

Or are you talking about something else ?

Very nice room htCanada! I'm a polk lover myself so I have a special appreciation for your LCRs...

I believe what you have in the pictures are called "tri-corner" base traps, which are slightly different from what ScruffyHT is (I think) referencing. When most people refer to base traps, they're talking about the super chunk style that run from floor to ceiling. Take a look at these for quick reference:

Ahh, gotcha !

While I'm positive those will make additional difference, I'm not going down that road ... at least not in the near future. I'm trying to acoustically treat the room, while keeping it "functionable". If I started putting super chunk style traps around the room, for me, it would feel to enclosed and honestly over the top.

If I had a 100% dedicated theater, I would consider. But this acts as both a party room, Wii/PS3 room for the kids and a Theater. I think I hit the best of all worlds with current state.

At this point, I have a few small treatments left, but that will be the extent of it for me. I'm extremely happy with the picture & sound in this room ... why mess with my own version of perfection :)

Cheers,

It is a small world! I'm originally from Fredericton...lived in Saint John for about a year working at Innovatia. I moved down to St. Louis, Missouri in 2004. Great looking room and good job. You can take a look at mine...see below for link.

Take care!

Very nice, I like your setup a lot. Very functional overall for sure.

However, I really liked it, until I hit the picture of the Montreal Canadians banner ... Now I dont like it so much :D

I'll save my "Montreal Canadians" comment for another time, another thread, another website ! :) lol, just kidding. I don't have to cause I know you all are closet Boston fans ... :D

Appreciate all the comments everyone. (Outside of slaughtering my Bruins) Keep them coming.

If you see something that look odd/out of place or could be done better, please tell me. As always, it is a learning experience for sure. This is my second time around, and I'm 300% happier with this setup. I actually tagged 10k (just slightly more than I had into it) onto my last house when it sold, and sold the entire theater with it so I could upgrade this time along.

Any and all comments welcomed.

I don't think there is any better place to enter my first post than here!

Great room you got there! I am in Moncton, NB and am in the process of getting my HT room built. Got the insulation up last weekend, now am on the fence as to how to proceed. If you don't mind me asking, what did you do as far as soundproofing (resilient channel, double drywall, green glue, other, nothing?) It sucks with the exchange rate right now, because like you I have been shopping online to get some of my stuff!

I have the same projector as you, how do you like it? Also, how do you like the Goo screen? I looked into that system, but decided to go another DIY route: WilsonArt Designer White laminate. Ordered it from Home Hardware, it will be in on Tuesday. I was happy with the price, so I hope it performs as well as people have been saying..

Anyways, Great room once again.

Cheers!

Count me in for that - at least a Fredericton area crawl - although all I can show people are some sketchup models at the moment :) Hoping to start the build later this year...

Not trying to jack your thread HTCanada, but would anybody in the Fredericton/St. John/Moncton area be interested in a group buy of some Sheerweave-4500 for some DIY screens? It would work out to something in the ballpark of $9CAD per linear foot of 63" high fabric.

PM me if you're interested.

Hey, if you local guys are on Sketchup, you're more than welcome to take a look at my design so far.

I'm debating between red and black and red and like a carmel/brown color.

I'd be glad to see your designs too, and here any feedback...and any help once we get under way. lol.

Yeah, pictures would be good! I could post up pictures of mine, but it's only up to insulation stage... I did hook up all the speakers tonight to make sure none of my wires were duds, all systems go. :)

Hoping to start drywall this week!
