View Full Version : Roku....should I buy now
I know it's only $100, but since it's been out for a about a year, should I hold off buying the Roku to use with my Netflix account, or should I jump in now? I ask because in the tech/AV world, a year is a long time and I am wondering if anyone has heard anything about a new/"improved" model coming out.
That is not to say that I have read that the current model is bad, it's just that I don't want to buy one now and have a new one come out in a month. Again, I am only asking because the original one has been out for a while.
Thanks

no idea... I have one and like it but we just got a samsung BDP-2500 for my friends which does the same thing and is also a excellent upscaling DVD and BD player. At $300 its more expensive but a more all in one solution and think its a good value. Same can be said for the LG BD Netflix player.

Sean:
Thanks, the Roku/DVD player angle was another route that I was thinking about taking. I have an OPPO right now that does a great job upscaling, so I was thinking about just getting the Roku.

sean_w_smith 03-12-09, 05:28 PM no interest in Blu Ray? the Samsung player BTW: has the silicon optix reon scaler/processor in it and it looks great. I dare say better than my oppo

Well it is tempting thanks. I have a Paradigm CC 190 laying around, maybe if I can get motivated and sell it on ebay I'll think about the Sammy.
I just saw an article in the NYT that Roku has now added Amazon's 30,000 available movie titles to Netflix's 12,000 - Do the Samsung or LG units above also receive from Amazon? I just ordered a Roku myself yesterday, I'll post impressions after I check it out ...

Currently I don't believe those Blu-ray units stream Amazon. But Both amazon and netflix showed their software running on TVs & stbs in CES in January. So it looks like both are trying to get their software out onto as many boxes as possible (netflix has the early lead in that department).
Hardhands 03-23-09, 09:06 PM The Amazon titles are nice, not much free stuff, but it's a nice option at 10pm when the local video store is closed and you need a movie for family/friends. I hear that Roku plans on adding 10 additional channels by year end.
Overall I've liked it. Video quality varies but the quality is at least SD and in some cases quite a bit better. Looks good on my Kuro. Connection quality is fairly solid on wireless with little to no buffer interuptions..it'll be even better when hooked via my nim100s.
Suzuki201 03-23-09, 11:07 PM I'm planning on getting one once I get my tax return. I do hate having to go to the rental place to pick up the movie and then driving back to drop it off.

Fredster 03-24-09, 10:40 AM We just got a Roku. This should be a no-brainer for Netflix folks (unless you don't like the free streaming movie selection). Video quality is close to DVD mostly, sound is 2 channel for now. Highly recommended.

What is the size of your tv? I am concerned that it will not be adequate resolution on a large tv.
I tried PlayOn, which streams Netflix, and it was marginal at best.

Playon doesn't stream netflix's HD streams. You will get a much better picture on HD streams through the roku. The only problem is that the HD streams are still somewhat limited.

limited BTW: = ~300 out of 12K streams are in HD
if you are netflix user you can't go wrong. The question is which unit to get...
I dont think playon looked any different but was terribly unreliable....
Its not the quality but the extra choice that makes it appealing....

sean_w_smith 03-25-09, 09:31 AM BTW: LG has announced cinemaNow support for their BD player that will be coming soon...

schu132 05-21-09, 11:16 AM Why are used roku players so expensive on ebay? Used rokus are selling in the $90 to $100 range there when you can get a brand new one with full warranty from roku for $100 plus $15 shipping? They've been out for a while you'd think you be able to get a used one now for a decent discount.
