I have a 42LG30 (720p) LCD tv and currently have an original Xbox connected to it via component cables that I also use for playing DVDs. I'm not looking to buy a Blu-ray player at this time, but would I get a better picture with an inexpensive upscaling player and connecting via HDMI? I'm looking at the Toshiba SD6100. Thanks for any advice.

There will probably be minor differences, depending on how closely you look at it. No DVD player will get you into a new realm of video quality, and component vs HDMI is not the huge issue some people make it out to be.
I would advise using a calibration disc with the gear you have before spending money on new equipment. It can make a bigger difference if you are not doing it already.
