View Full Version : Simple 720P to 1080P scaler... (suggestions? Was looking at Gefen one...)

Well, I'm looking for a cheap scaler that can scale 720P to 1080P (possibly 480P to 1080P) with less than a frame of delay.

I don't need any sort of deinterlacing or whatever. just a faster scaler than what's in my current LCD.

I've currently got a LN52A650 Samsung LCD TV and have both an XBox360 and a Playstation 3. I've got the 360 plugged in through VGA and have the 360 doing it's own scaling to 1080P, which produces little to no input lag.

However, the Playstation 3 has a bit of input lag when you play a 720P game that the TV has to upscale to 1080P. It's not really bad, but I guess it bothers me knowing it's there. =P

I can use Game mode to eliminate some of the lag but then you have no PQ settings.

Reading up on the input lag thread, if a 1080P signal is fed to the TV through the HDMI/DVI 2 input while it's labeled PC, the input lag (or lack thereof) is better than Game mode and very close to the VGA input being fed a 1080P signal.

So, anyhow, was just looking for something that takes a 720P input and scales it to 1080P with little to no lag. I saw this linked in another thread: http://www.gefen.com/gefentv/gtvproduct.jsp?prod_id=5284 but didn't really see anyone's experiences with it.

Reading it, it looks like it might be sufficient for what I want to do. If anyone has any experience doing 720P to 1080P on this unit or if you have any suggestions then by all means, please reply to this thread.

Thank you!!

Set your XBox360 to 720p and see if the lag remains as before. I would expect this on the VGA port. And if yes, just get a HDFury HDMI to VGA converter and connect your PS3 through VGA as well. It just makes little sense that the delay you're feeling is the scaling. Scaling is usually ultra-fast. It's more likely the additional processing on the HDMI ports which causes the delay you feel.

The Gefen adapter looks good as well. I've got a VGA to HDMI scaler from Gefen and it's nearly lagfree as well.

I don't have any problems with lag on the 360, because it's through the VGA input and always 1080P.

According to this thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1110472 it is the processing on the HDMI ports which causes the delay.

However, using HDMI/DVI 2 in PC mode will eliminate the majority of the processing, but the processing will only be eliminated if it receives a 1080P signal.

That's why I'm here. =P

I guess if you've tried one of their products and it worked okay, this one should do the trick for upscaling PS3 720P games to 1080P. Then I could plug the output into the HDMI/DVI 2 and set it to PC mode...

it is the processing on the HDMI ports which causes the delay.
yes, but processing in general and scaling are two pair of shoes. On the link provided I've just seen that the Samsungs don't support 720p via VGA, so the HDFury is nothing for you anyway.

I would still be careful with the Gefen HDMI Scaler. It has a built-in deinterlacer (which causes delay) and you need to make sure that it's bypassed when feeding progressive signals. Just email the Gefen support about it. They're good at what they're doing. I inquired before buying my VGA to HDMI scaler and they were spot on with any info I got.
