So I've read through the 1st 50 pages of the stickied Acoustics thread and noticed I'm only 1/3 through it. It was recommended to start your own thread for room specific questions, so here we go!

I'm working with an existing 12x16 "Media Room" which means the builder put in a room with no windows, 4 columns, and prewiring. We are settled in now and I'd like to attack acoustical treatments (absorbtion and traps), and maybe add a little stage in the front.

I am posting a few diagrams to show you how the room exists today, note the following:

8' walls with ceiling vaulted on 3 sides to 10 or 12 feet
4 columns that extend 3" into the room
Double doors in a rear corner
Today there is a 60' DLP on a stand in the front, projecter comes later
Rear surrounds mounted above door height for THX DTSMA width apart
7.1 is DefTech Mythos ST's, Mythos Ten center, and 4 Mythos Two surrounds

ACOUSTIC QUESTIONS:
1. 1" 703 total front and to ear level at sides covered with GOM: still necessary if I will have 2" 703 panels at first reflection points? If I treat to ear level (4.5' or so) I don't have room for 4' panels vertically. I know, room measurements, I have downloaded Room EQ and will try posting values

2. Superchunks using 4" 705: if I do the front 2 corners to the top of where the ceiling vaults, there will be a gap, the top of the chunks will be flat but the ceiling will angle up to leave a little wedge gap..ideas?

3. Do I need to do anything at the vaulted ceilings? Can I put the traps that high even if they are not a 90/45 degree tri corner?

4. Is having rear surrounds above door opening an issue?

5. Is it good practice to place seating x% of the room back away from the screen ( for ideal surround sound) then use the distance to calculate the size screen to buy afterward? Does THX have a spec like 60 or 75%

6. Velvet curtains: I see them used alot and want them myself, but I read they are too reflective. Would you even treat behind them anyway?

7. Rear walls: I would consider adding 2 panels in the back, however to center them one would be on a wall and one would be on one of the doors which would then have to stay shut. is that an issue? which also makes me ask:

8. Does leaving doors open affect sound quality?

9. Do the columns negatively affect anything? should they be treated?

Yes go with 2" at the first reflection points.

2. Superchunks using 4" 705: if I do the front 2 corners to the top of where the ceiling vaults, there will be a gap, the top of the chunks will be flat but the ceiling will angle up to leave a little wedge gap..ideas?

Just fill the remaining part and cover with fabric.

3. Do I need to do anything at the vaulted ceilings? Can I put the traps that high even if they are not a 90/45 degree tri corner?

Still treating those corners will be helpful.

6. Velvet curtains: I see them used alot and want them myself, but I read they are too reflective. Would you even treat behind them anyway?

Putting bass trapping behind them is fine.

7. Rear walls: I would consider adding 2 panels in the back, however to center them one would be on a wall and one would be on one of the doors which would then have to stay shut. is that an issue? which also makes me ask:

Placing them on the door is fine.

8. Does leaving doors open affect sound quality?

Yes it is like having a perfect absorber. :) The sound leaves and never comes back.

9. Do the columns negatively affect anything? should they be treated?

Only if they are in a early reflection in the room.
