Hi,

I just had another 18 sheets of drywall delivered. My first 30 sheets were sheetrock brand by USG. The sheets were perfect, and heavy as a mofo. This second round ot sheets is a brand I don't recognize, but they are also 5/8" 4x8 firecode rated gypsum. They feel lighter, and more flimsy, than the previous drywall. Is that possible? Are different brands of drywall made with different densities?

I'm doing the DD+GG method, and this is for my second layer. The first layer is done, and I've got 3 sheets of the heavier drywall on the ceiling, and this is going next to it. they are the same thickness at least.

So is this something I should be worried about? Or will the GG simply counteract the density difference anyway, making the STC differences a non-issue?

I can't complain too much about these though, they were cheaper delivery AND it included free carry into the premesis vs. what I bought at HD initially. ;)

Drywall dries over time - it gets harder and lighter. Try to cut a piece of drywall that is old and you will see the difference. It is much stiffer.

As far as quality of drywall, I got my first load from Home Depot - it was USG - and was great. My second load I got from Lowes and it sucked. It was cheaper. The paper was too thin and the back would rip.

After it was up there was no difference.

To sum it up - don't worry about it.

I have never noticed a difference in brands. My basement remodel was the first time I had it delivered from a supply house. For my other projects I have purchased DW from Lowes, THD, or Menards. My .02 is to go with the cheapest of the options.

Brands vary and USG is well known to be heavier than the rest

Just a FYI I recall reading an article recently about some problems with chinese drywall.

a quick google will get you more info

At least mine isn't chinese, it's got "made in USA" stamped all over it. It's something like "Guide brand'. It's kinda neat, they have light x's on the front where the studs are, so you have a grid pattern for drilling the screws in. Makes measuring much easier.

Thanks for the feedback!

I got a bunch of drywall with the X's from a local building supply vendor. It was a familiar brand can't recall but different then what they have at HD. The X's were actually very useful.

Not sure about the US, but the various ones here vary quite a bit in terms of density - if soundproofing is a concern, denser is better. Get the spec sheets from the manufacturers, if they dont quote it call them.

Also, talk to a few painters they will tell you which ones finish better than others - the papers they use makes a big difference - assuming you're painting it and not doing fabric or wallpaper

I believe that is National Gypsums Gold Bond

Sounds like the same kind I have. I would definitely rate it as lower grade than USG. Next time I order I"ll know to ask. :)
