I had a Helios H4000 DVD that could output 1080i via component video, had a built-in PAL/NTSC converter and was region free. It would not power on one day, and my search indicated that my retailer, neodigits, was out of business. I contacted Helios for help a couple of weeks ago, they never responded, now with their site suspended, and it appears they are gone too.
Anyone know of a DVD player (or better yet Blu-ray) that can output 1080i over component video with built-in PAL/NTSC converter and region free?

DVD: The OPPO 970/980/983.
Blu-ray: I think most players will produce 1080i over component. I'm not aware of any region free players in the US. The upcoming OPPO BDP-83 does PAL/NTSC conversion but is not region free.

Blu-ray players will output 1080i over Component for Blu-ray content only. DVD playback is limited to 480p over Component. Upconversion can only be done over HDMI.

Right you are. I was thinking of non-CSS protected DVD. The OPPO will scale those to 1080i over component, and I presume some other players will do the same, although I haven't kept track.

The LG BH200 can easily be made to do region free as well as play PAL, but it won't upconvert over component. The Toshiba HD DVD (not Blu-Ray) players will upconvert non-CSS protected over component to 1080i. Region free and PAL hacks for the Toshiba players are slightly more cumbersome.
