I have a new 24" off brand 1080p monitor that I got online for almost nothing. It's a no-name HP 2408H branded TSI (I think). We are Cablevision customers in Northern Westchester, NY and I have another HD rig in the living room with SA 8250HD PVR, Sharp 46", PS-3...

I have NOT been able to get the Cablebox Volume to work with our new setup in the bedroom. I believe Cablevision uses Sara software and it's a new box so when I did the setup it (should have) involved a complete software download and update at first power up. I followed all instruction. The STB is hooked up to the monitor with HDMI cable. The monitor has speakers (albe-they crappy). I hear sound and get a decent 1080i picture via HDMI. The monitor has no IR remote capabilities, so I want to adjust the volume via the STB remote. I programmed the UR2 as per the instruction and it does indeed 'indicate' that it is changing the volume of the cable box.... there is a moving volume bar on screen and the the number counts up or down on the front of the STB when I operate the volume control on the remote or on the box.....

Problem is, The Volume Doesn't Change at all!! I called Cablevision and wasted 40 minutes of my time, as these guys know nothing!! but they did assure me that the volume should change (be variable) from HDMI. I have checked settings and vol is set for VARIABLE (if FIXED there's no display of changing volume) and DIG AUDIO is set for HDMI (or else there's no sound via HDMI).

So.. Is it possible to control the Volume Output of a SA4250HD STB using HDMI as a connection to a monitor with speakers??? HELP PLEASE!!

I am willing to go to the Analog Audio outs on the STB, but so far I'm trying to get this all done with HDMI.

I believe that the volume control on your Hewlet Packard monitor itself may be set to zero making ineffetive any audio signal it is receiving from your STB.
See page 4-3 of the HP user's manual:

No.. I hear the sound... the volume control (internal OSD) on the monitor works fine. I just can't get the volume on the SA 4250 to do anything... it indicates volume is adjusting, but it doesn't change (but I do hear it)..

Anybody else have any ideas??

I have a Motorola cable STB and it does not have the cabability to change the volume level over HDMI. The Motorola remote does allow me to change the volume level setting on my HDTV it does not change the volume level being sent over the HDMI interface. Apparnetly with your SA STB you see that the volume level out of the STB is being changed or that the volume setting of our monitor is being changed that this is in fact is not happening since the only way for you to change the volume level on the monitor is to use its own volume control from its menu.

... and this is the heart of the question.

Can a SA 4250 box change it's OUTPUT volume over HDMI?? I suspect not, but the cable company is telling me "absolutely it can".. of course, they don't seem to have a clue, which is why I turned to avsforum.
