Hey guys, I'm have a 47LG70 120hz LCD and for some reason when I play metal gear solid 4 on my ps3 it doesn't look really clear/detailed and lags a little bit. I had a few friends who own the game come over and they also said it didn't look razor sharp to them. I have my settings set to 1080p and I'm using mono price cables. But when I play games on my xbox 360 it looks much more clear. Does anyone else who has this game notice that it's not as clear or sharp as it should be?

Ive got a Sammy FPT-5084 Plasma and it looks exquisite. On 60gb original release PS3 direct to TV via Monoprice HDMI.

Are you direct HDMI to TV or bypassing thru receiver?

Also, maybe the 120hz is an issue since the game is 30fps and the extra interpolation may be causing it?

Someone with much better understanding can answer that.

I have a 40gb PS3 directly connected to the tv and for the 120hz I have true motion turned off. As for the versions of ps3s, they are all the same right? Only the hard drive size is the difference?

This game runs sub-HD like many other games (on both platforms). That may be what is doing it. The game runs at 1024x768. Two other very popular sub HD games are CoD4 (600p) and Halo 3 (640p).

Not sure what the deal is with the lag.

As far as video processing they should be the same. I wasnt aware the true motion could be turned off so that pretty much settles that question.

Have you tried forcing the video output on the PS3 to 720p just for craps and giggles? I m pretty sure its supposed to be 1080p native, but its worth a shot.

There may also be some value in looking up the "preffered" video output settings via the AVS thread for the PS3. But it sounds like the issue really is only with MGS4 correct?

I've tried playing cod4 on my 360 and it looks really good. Yes we actually tried setting the output to 720p last night and it looked way worse than 1080p, almost like ps2 graphics. The only other game I've tried playing on my ps3 is Little Big Planet and it looked pretty decent to me, wasn't sure how detailed it was suppose to look.

Metal Gear Solid is one of the best looking games this generation, so you may want to consider the following:

1. Check all the settings of your PS3 - there are a lot of different settings that could affect picture quality.
2. Check your cable - highly doubt this is the problem.
3. Force PS3 to 1080p mode then try 1080i then 720p and see if there is a difference
4. Disable some settings that affect picture quality on your LG television.

If you still find the graphics sub-par, then replace television (again) but this time, pick another brand, or try it at a friends house.

In the end, it is not the game as the graphics are great and there really is no "lag" in this game, at least not what I remember.

MGS games are not graphical games, Kojima always makes the visuals look dirty on purpose, he isn't big on teh graphics or for HD ERA for that matter.

The mastermind doesn't care much for HD, either. "We're not the ones who are saying we want HD. I'm not interested, myself, about HD at all. MGS games tend not to care about how clean the screen looks...we deliberately make the graphics look dirtier to give the atmosphere more life.

I always thought MGS4 while it was amazing, it was just the details that made it amazing in terms of visuals NOT the textures or anything else, it is all about the details for Kojima and MGS games.

The game isn't anything special in terms of textures, it is all about details not textures and YES THEIR IS a small frame rate issue in this game, but thats because it actually goes to 60fps for like a few seconds before going down to 30 again, try it, go online or even in story, press all the UP on the R stick and then start walking L stick and notice how smooth that looks.

The textures are good but not Gears of War 2 good. That's not a PS3 issue, it's just that it wasn't what Kojima was going for.

IMO there was too much effort put into animations and movies and not enough into graphics and enemy character variety.

The game looks great by any measure; not exceptional, but definitely as good as any other AAA title. Setting the PS3 to 720p, should not have changed a thing. If it doesn't look exactly like it did when you had 1080p selected in your settings, then something is wrong. The game outputs natively at 720p (or thereabouts), so either the PS3 or your TV will be upscaling it to 1080p and it really shouldn't much matter which.

My first inclination would be to try a different HDMI input. Also, if you're running everything through an AVR, check your settings and make sure you don't have any video processing (scaling) going on with your AVR.

Explain your setup clearly and that might help.

I've tried switching to different hdmi ports using monoprice cables directly connected to the tv and it looks the same. Whenever I can, I'll try playing mgs4 at my friends house with his panasonic plasma and see how it looks there.

I just traded this game in. What a waste of $60.

Dude, after the story Otacon told Snake about him and his step-mom, I can't believe he left her with Sunny.

I would curious to know what type of setup you have as well as whether you had it calibrated.

While I would agree that this game isn't the best game that ever existed, the graphics are up there with other AAA titles.

I have played this game on a 106" screen and haven't noticed it to be the brutual experience as outlined in the original post, so as curious as I am, what type of setup are you running that shows the game to 60fps then 30fps.

I would assume that you are using some type of device that can read frames per second?
