View Full Version : Player and Receiver outputs 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 ?

I realize that the chroma subsampling of the recorded material on DVD and Bluray is 4:2:0, and it has to be upsampled to 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 to be displayed on the display device.
If I am not wrong, CRT TVs have a bandwidth only 4:2:2 (chroma bandwidth is half that of the luma). But non-CRT TVs(LCS, Plasma) need/require 4:4:4 to display the picture.

I suppose an interface connection like component video or hdmi or dvi would have to be able to work with both types of displays - 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 ? So what is chroma bandwidth on any of those connection going to the tv from the player or the a/v receiver ? I'd imagine its got to be 4:2:2 in order to be compatible with all types of tvs ? But that would also mean that the final 4:2:2 to 4:4:4 upsampling on the non-crt tvs would be happening in the tv!
Am I thinking this through correctly ?
