I have a DCT6416. is there anyway to shut it off using the remote control without unplugging it? to turn off the hardrive and stuff cuz when I turn it off with the remote it just turns off the cable going to to the screen.

Why would you want to? Your programs don't get recorded when the DVR is unplugged. Furthermore, unplugging the unit on a regular basis reduces the life of the DVR.

If you leave the DVR plugged in 24/7 -- as recommended --- it will add about $2-3/mo to your electric bill.

The only way is to unplug it.
Hopfully next year there will be Motorola STBs that meet the new Energy Star standards for cable or satellite STBs and therefore will not have their disks running 365/24.
