Hi, I have an old Quicksilver G4 with two hard drives. The larger(300gb) has copies of most of my CD collection saved in iTunes.
I've acquired a MDD 1.25 powerMac with an 80 gig drive. Can I simply physically take the 300 gig out of the Quicksilver put it in the MDD 1.25 and still be able to play my music from that drive?
The physical moving should be a piece of cake but I'd like to make sure I wouldn't lose my ability to play my music on that drive.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Assuming that your 300 GB drive is your boot drive, there's no reason why you can't move it from your Quicksilver to the MDD.
That's what I've done, from a Gigabit to a MDD. In my case, the drives were actually SATA drives, I just moved the SATA card over to the MDD. When I got my G5, I just popped the drives in. And just in case your drive isn't SATA, there shouldn't be any problems with moving an IDE/ATA/PATA drive. Though you might consider picking up a ATA/133 card for faster throughput.
For more specifics, do a search in iTunes' Help menu for the following topics:
Changing where your iTunes files are stored
Moving your iTunes library to another computer
Hope this helps. :D
Thanks for the input!
Unfortunately the 300 gig is not the boot drive.
I looked around on the Apple forums. They were talking more than a bit over my head. At any rate without significantly more knowledge than I now possess it apears it can't be done.
I have an Airport extreme and an external hd enclosure. I may try taking the 300 gig out of the Quicksilver an hooking it up to the router. Maybe that'll work?

I don't see why you couldn't, even if you connected it to your AirPort Extreme.
So, long as your MDD can is the 300GB drive, you just to have to iTunes where you "new" iTunes Library is located. If you connect it to your Extreme, you just have to make sure that you set the AirDisk to mount automatically at boot.
Have you tried taking at look at the two iTunes Help topics?

tulum, you might be making things more complicated for yourself...if I'm reading you right, you want to merge two libraries, the one that's on that 300GB drive, with the one already on your MDD. So, once you install that 300GB drive in your MDD, you just need to add that music to the instance of iTunes that's already running on the MDD.
You do have iTunes on the MDD, right? If so, open it, then find the folder on that 300GB drive that contains all your music files, then drag and drop it onto the Library entry of the iTunes Source list to add the files. This will copy all the music from the 300GB drive to the other drive in the MDD, wherever your MDD iTunes library is. But, you may not want to do that, you may just want to keep those files right where they are on the 300GB drive. If so, that's easy to do, choose Preferences > Advanced > General and uncheck the "Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder When Adding to Library" option BEFORE you drag and drop that folder. When you do this, iTunes will leave the files right on the 300GB drive rather than copying them over.
Chefklc, Thanks for the input.!My intention was to take the 300 gig out of the Quicksilver put it in the MDD and then sell the Quicksilver. I had copied my iTunes to a HTPC I built. Wouldn't you know ,the motherboard in the PC (which I don't like to use) died.
I am now thinking I'll just keep the Quicksilver and/or buy a large drive for the MDD.
Thank You Very Much, Jim
