Interesting. Maybe a little competition will finally get WD to release its long overdue firmware.

Interesting box but what I like about the WDTV box is that I can walk into a BestBuy and pick one up. Which means I can also return to store it if there is a problem within 30 days.

The popcorn hour, like other boxes, are not sold in stores and warranty returning a DOA box to China does not inspire confidence.

Egreat has other products and we have to wait and see about this new one.

To kill the WDTV, the competition has to move to the Brick and Motor stores like WD has done, and be competitively priced. $50 more, is quiet a price difference (about 33%). So I don't see the WDTV going away anytime soon.

...and the only thing this can do the WD can't is web apps, especially since the WD can now be hacked for NAS, SMB.

Forget WD HD TV, this sucker will kill other mainstream NMT's just on the price point. I got WD HD TV 2 months ago and i enjoy it throughly.

If i had the chose 2 moths ago, i would have picked this HD device over WD TV.

I read elsewhere its the same unit as the WDTV, it even has the same side panels a Chinese company has a reference design which it sells to various companies it includes stuff the WDTV does not use like web apps, upnp, network etc (but is being hacked into by modders).

So this is just another of these units with some of the other features enabled out of the box (probably the reason for the higher price).

BTW, where on the site does it say $150? Also, when will this be available, as I see no purchase links. I wonder why this info is not on the site, but was obtained via email....

Uhm, so DTS (which for some/myself is a non-issue since we pass to receiver) and networking for 50% increase in price. I wouldn't quite call it a "killer".

Until it proves itself it's really not a threat to either PCH or WD HD TV but the pricing might convince some that were eyeing either to go for this product.

I think its more a K100 killer than WDTV killer regarding price tag and features

well i guess if WD TV really can use NAS ans SMB now then the only advantage is YAMJ?

YAMJ worth the extra $$ to me and as far as i know it doesn't work on wd tv

Yeah, it's actually a 50% increase in price...A price that I don't actually see even listed on that link, sooo

There is little to no info on this device although I am intrigued...I think about the only things I'd like added to my WDTV would be the ability to add YAMJ, DTS and an internal slave HD...If it can do it, not bad.

I heard from eGreat about it and they say It will be available for pre-order later this week and edited/translated specs will be posted. It will be $149. It will arrive and ship to customers about 1 month from today.

As it is, I'm pretty happy

Can this thing play vobs or isos just like dvd with full menu access support? Anybody know?

It looks basically like an NMT (aka Popcorn Hour-like) without the room for an internal HDD. Hopefully they've redone the UI and menus to for flashiness and better navigation. If so, for $20 more, I'd get this over the WD. Of course while the WD often goes on sale for $90 or $100, I doubt we'll find this box for anything less than the supposed $149 price, which makes it too expensive IMHO.

Nonetheless, the NMT's seem to be more "compatible" with MKVs, and they'll play DVD ISO's, which is convenient.

this is the only site ive seen where you can actually buy one so far. and it is for 149.
im interested in finding out how well it will actually perform cause im in a tossup between a PH or a WDTV and this seems (according to what is advertised) to be the best fit for me personally. i had to put "DOT" where the "." should be cuase of this being my first post.

This NMT looks interesting. I like the idea of having an internal HDD on board though, so you can take your DVD library with you on a trip, which is nice if you have kids. I'm not sure how durable these NMTs are when traveling (checked baggage, back of car, etc).

So, for $50 bucks more stream to your bedroom AND have the ability to take the player on a trip. Dropping 150+ movies on a 1TB drive makes the unit more functional. (1TB drives going for just under $100).

I've been looking at ioBOX & HDX 1000.

I've been studying up a bit on NMTs. Here's a link to a comparison of 2nd Gen NMTs. It's a Euro site, so be aware of the ESL translation challenges.

The "killer" statement is just marketing talk for "folks thinking about buying x should consider y as well."

It won't "kill" the WD as WD has way-superior marketing power. Already thousands more people have heard of the WD than have heard of the PCH, NMT, TVIX, etc. though these were around way before.

EGreat (http://www.egreatusa.com/) has the egreat m34a (http://www.egreatusa.com/egreat-egm34a-networked-media-tank-n34.html) for pre-order now if you want to have a look:

If this gets added to the firmware like they say, it's a done deal.

how could someone write in that they had the this unit when it is not even shipping until End of April.

also, the big difference is it has HDMI 1.3

It can and will do the uncompressed sound formats

The WDTV can never be HDMI 1.3,

this unit will be a killer when it comes out; it can do more things

I heard it may do DVD Menu and chapters

interesting but, eh.

the ability to transfer video/audio over a network to a device isnt a thrill (slow/boring).
the ability to stream content.. um, its already free: www.orb.com
lets say it could stream HD:

1) network saturation
2) what device would you attach to your multiple televisions to receive the stream?!
...dont say a pc (you wouldnt even need this/any device)

a better gapless music server.. I'm in.
a flawless HD player..I'm in. (but lets not be naive - ver 1 release..whatever)

Greetings.

Does it offer support for
1. AVCHD playback?
2. USB DVD-ROM drive?

Thansk and best regards.
