View Full Version : Clicking Sound on Motorized Recline - Berkline?

My HT chairs have been sitting unused in my living room for nearly a year and now that the HT build is nearly completion, of course I seem to have a problem with one of my chairs (Berk 078s).

I noticed that on one of the chairs that when you push the button to put the chair back in the upright position it continues to click (when pressed) after the chair has resumed the full upright position. Motorized recline is fully functional but I imagine the clicking sound is not a good sign. Any ideas on what might be wrong?

I also emailed Roman and he remarked that he hadn't heard about this problem in a very long time, but that the white stopper might need to be adjusted. Adjustment to the white plastic pieces by pushing them one way or another. But they're screwed on and cannot be easily moved by just applying pressure with your fingers. I've also attached a pic for better illustration purposes. Thanks.

I suspect you won't be able to see how to adjust the stop until you can see it from the other side. You might have to remove the assembly to get access. I'm sure you already PMed Roman so let's see what he says.

I do see two silver screws on that black bar. If you loosen them (counter clockwise) the block MIGHT slide

Stephanie,

Have you tried what BIGmouthinDC suggested?

Hey BIG, give me a little credit. I do know lefty loosey and righty tighty :). But to no avail, that didn't help. I just moved that chair out of my loveseat to one of the less used side chairs. Bumming though that it still clicks :(.

If expert opinions aren't forthcoming, what you really have to do is approach it like most guys would, rather than read the directions or ask for instructions you take apart the rail/switch assembly apart, you look at how the stop engages a switch and opportunities to make it engage a little earlier. Maybe the stop is adjustable, maybe the switch mount is adjustable, Maybe you can just attach something to the contact area making it bigger.

The key to this process is never break something in the process and try to remember how everything goes back together.

One of my Berkline reclinders started making a rattling/vibration sound when opening/closing about midway through the full recline process. I sprayed some WD40 on the worm gear and it has worked perfectly ever since... Not sure this is what you are talking about. SJ

I have 8 chairs from Roman as well and a few of them exhibit the exact behavior that you mention. I haven't spent anytime trying to figure it out and remember in posts several years ago that people mentioned making some sort of adjustment to the stopper (whatever & wherever that is). I am interested in the solution...

No further comments/directions?

albrigsr,

I actually contacted Berkline, and they recommended replacing the actuator.

Roman,
Thank you for the response. What piece is the actuator and how difficult is it to replace? Is there a cost (assume so which doesn't make me happy since several of my chairs have always had this issue)?

albrigsr,

The actuator is a motor that actually drive the reclining mech. It should be quite straight forward to replace. You have one year warranty on power recline components. If you are out of warranty you would need to purchase these. Contact me off line for pricing.
