What's up?

Currently I have the following setup ->

-Xbox 360 by my TV
-A laptop in my closet
-DLink 323 in my closet

* All via wired network

I have TVersity running on my laptop to transcode my media on the DLink.

Question: Can Windows 7 serve DivX and/or XviD and/or MKV, etc. to the media center extender?

That being said - is it possible to somehow accomplish ONE of these (not ALL of these)

- Eliminate the need for the laptop and serve the media (DivX/XviD/MKV,etc) directly from the DLink in the media center extender of xbox 360?

or

- Install windows 7 on the laptop and serve the media (DivX/XviD/MKV,etc) to the media center extender in Xbox 360?

or

- Not use the media center extender - but eliminate the need for the laptop to transcode the media and access it in the "VIDEO" section of the Xbox?

Thanks,

Mstars

If you use TVersity on the notebook it will transcode any type of media into the type of media that the Xbox360 can play. TVersity will show up as a source/server under the Video/Picture/Music sections.

If you have a NAS that has a UPnP/DLNA applet that the Xbox360 can see then you will not need the notebook running TVersity BUT all the media will have to be in a format that the Xbox360 can understand. There will not be any transcoding. I know the Dlink 323 has the UPnP function but I do not know if they took the extra steps needed to make it work with the Xbox360. Even if this does work there will still not be any transcoding taking place. Your NAS will show up as a source/server under the Video/Picture/Music sections.

You could also use the Windows Media Player or MCE functions and the Media Center Extender setup as well.

If you have lots of different types of media formats the easiest way to make it all work with the least amount of headaches, in my opinion, is the notebook/TVersity combo.

I really really wish Microsoft would release either a codec pack or advanced media center download for Free -> $30 for the Xbox360 for those of us that want to use it this way.

Jeff

I use Dlink DNS-323 with XBOX360 and PS3. The catch is to use Twonky media server on DNS-323. I believe Tversity requires a computer to be on all times. Twonky is able to stream mp4, avi, m2ts, WMV video files in addition to music and photos. Google DNS-323.wiki if you need how to install twonky on DNS. Twonky is not free but worth the money.:)
