Hello,

After sitting around for awhile with two HD-DVD players an A2 and an A20 I finally decided to take advantage of the clearance pricing on a lot of the discs now available. I purchased the The Matrix Ultimate box set used and while watching disc one my player froze at about 1:07:50 . I pulled the disc out cleaned the disc, and cleaned the player too. I am still having the same issue. I also can't skip past the problem either.

I am currently running fw 2.7 on the A2. My A20 is packed away until I get the basement done so I have not been able to test on that unit.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I pulled out my A20 and I still have the same problem. My A20 has fw 2.8. So is it a disc issue or a fw issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would buy a single disc but I can't seem to find one.

I have managed to get the rest of the movie to play without any problems there just seems to be about 4-5 minutes of the movie that is corrupted. I guess that is a bright spot anyway. Now on to check the other two discs.

I just watched the second disc. Went through the entire disc without one hiccup. I started to watch the third disc and get the following error code 408bc504.

I am going to try to update the firmware to see if that resolves my issues.

I would still like to hear others opinions about what is going on or if you know what the error code means.

Thanks.

408bc504 seems to be a code for a disc error. I have a pretty scratched disc that gives this error at the same point every time. If you don't see a scratch or surface abrasion then there's something about the disc the player can't handle. If cleaning the disc doesn't do the trick upgrading your firmware is the next logical step. Since two players stumble on it, firmware may not solve this but you do have old firmware so it's a good idea to upgrade anyway.

The code shows up on the third disc and I only tried the third disc on the A20 not the A2. Your correct that both players stumble on the same area of the first disc. I'm hoping it is a firmware issue vs. a disc issue. I bought the box set off of ebay from a seller with 100 feedback. They listed the set as new but unwrapped and never watched. The set looks PERFECT and from what I can tell no scratches or any anomaly I can see visually.

I will have the opportunity to update firmware today (which is a good idea anyway) so we will see what happens. I have some new still in wrapper and used discs coming from Amazon over the next few days so I'm sitting here with my fingers crossed. I started to second guess myself for investing more money into a "dead" format and then I went over to the "Blu" forum and I see they are having the same sort of issues with the "winning" format.

Thanks for your help and input.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Combo discs. :(

They have their advantages. I have been able to loan my sis a couple of movies that were on Combos and also watch a few on my laptop. Non-combo movies like Transformers can only be watched by me in my basement which is not always the best choice on a late weekday evening.

There was a production problem with the Matrix disc 1. So I wouldn't be surprised if the problem persists after FW upgrade and cleaning. My boxset had the same problem, and I was able to exchange the disc. The issue was fixed on later production runs.

interesting, when I borrowed a friend of mine`s matrix trilogy, only the first one played regularly, the other two were giving me problems.

Well there is good news and bad news. Disc one is still giving me problems so it is a disc issue. As the disc was new and I see no scratches I'm out of ideas on what to do other than just outright purchasing a new disc one to "complete" my collection. If there was a scratch it might have been worth it to try a disc repair or polish machine but I think I'm dead in the water.

Good news is after my firmware update disc three plays perfectly so my issue with that has been resolved. Overall I'm happy that it worked out that way. Thanks for all of your input.

Sorry you still have problems. It might be worth while to contact Warners to see if they will exchange it. It could save you the cost a buying another one.

Really? I did not even consider contacting Warner about the issue. I'll try that and see if I get anywhere.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I bought the Matrix on HD-DVD from inetvideo.com as separate releases.
I'm wondering if it was ever sold in 3 single releases or someone just took a Complete or Ultimate set and sold the movies individually.
I bought them used.

Cheers,
Gui.

From what I understand The Matrix was available as two "boxed sets" and as individual releases as well.

On HD DVD, the Matrix trilogy was released as a 3-disc "Complete Collection" or a 6-disc "Ultimate Collection". The movies were not released separately. However, a significant number of people bought the "Complete Collection" and broke it apart to sell the movies individually on eBay and the Amazon Marketplace.

I stand corrected.

DOH!

Thanks for the clarification.

That's what I tought.
Thanks for the heads up.
Actually I bought The Matrix from inetvideo.ca and several months later I bought reloaded at inetvideo.ca and revolutions from amazon.com.
I should just wait and buy the ultimate set now...
I have it on dvd.

I have it on dvd.

The "Ultimate" HD DVD set are all Combo discs. As demonstrated in this thread, Combo discs tend to be glitchy as hell.

If you already have the Ultimate DVD set, the only new bonus features exclusive to the HD DVD are the In Movie Experience tracks, which are also found on the "Complete" set.

iNetVideo has the Matrix "Complete trilogy" on clearance for $17.77. Perhaps a chance to replace defective discs, or just add another great boxset to the collection...

I also found "The Ultimate Matrix Collection" on eBay for $19.99. What percentage of the combo discs are glitchy? It seems like too good of a deal to pass up.

I believe that for whatever reason the Ultimate Collection had more issues than the Complete Trilogy box set.

My first disc is defective. I have now sent two emails to Warner CS inquiring for their help (no show for their CS as of yet) so we will see if they still support their discs, but I'm not holding my breath.

The other issue I had was a firmware issue and now that I have updated my players there is not one issue withe the last disc and it plays flawlessly.

I'm looking into just purchasing another box set to get a good disc one.

Well WB is so far a no-show on the email front. There is not one whisper of HD-DVD on their website so there is little hope they still support customers issues with "new" discs after the demise. I guess that is the risk I take in purchasing a dead format, but the benefits far out weigh the risks.

Anybody got any other suggestions or a better link to WB?

A local store here offers "disc polishing/resurfacing" on regular DVD's do you guys think this is worth a shot? Opinions on this would be greatly appriciated.

Honestly, at this point, you'd be better off just buying the standalone release of the first movie on Blu-ray.

Nope did not try that. Stupid question does it have to be dawn? I know that there are different types of soap configurations but I'm thinking that if I use a non abrasive dish soap then I'm OK right?

Thanks for the suggestion.

As for purchasing the Matrix on Blu...not yet first I see no reason to and second I don't have a Blu player and won't for some time.

Thanks!

Tried the soap and water trick and that did not work but now my disc is extra shiny!!!!

I truly think it is a bad spot or a encoding problem with the disc so I'll just have to break down and buy a single disc for the set.
