So I would like to use my PS3 (or XBOX if its a better option) as a media server for movies, photos, music, etc... but to be honest I'm completely lost and the more I try to research the more lost I get with all the talk of encoding and ripping and this and that.

I'd like to be able to save movies to my hard drive (rip DVDs mainly), stream music (I know itunes is an issue), etc... but don't know what programs to use, what's entailed in ripping DVDs, etc..

Can anyone recommend a good FAQ or start point in laymans term?

I second that emotion.

Stay away from TVersity, unless you want a search bar forcibly installed onto your Internet Explorer and a media server program that you can't begin to understand how to use.
