I just bought the Sony. To replace a Samsung 357.
I bought it because it got more positive reviews from users then any other unit. But I don't know if the Denon was in the list.
My Samsung would still play CD's but stopped being able to read DVD's.
So far the Sony has been working great, plays everything. The sound is very good, (I have high end audio) but I am pretty sure the picture is not quite as good as the Samsung. (HDMI hook up to a Samsung 5271) It is still a good picture though, enough that I am not complaining.
The set up was very easy.
I can't seem to get it to automatically play a disc when I put it it, even though I've messed with that setting in set up.
It does load very fast. And will play as soon a s I hit the play button. Much faster than the Samsung.
The price was the same for it everywhere, with the 10% coupon it was cheaper at BB then Walmart. 71 dollars.
No experiance with the Denon.

Sony uses Mediatek chipset for MPEG decoding and deinterlacing. It's pretty good. Denon uses FLI-2301 (Faroudja) for scaling and deinterlacing. It'll be better for video tittles like anime, TV shows, concerts, etc. Film-based DVD's like most movies will be similar between the 2 players. Faroudja-based players may cause macroblocking (blotchy color changes) on some tittles on some displays (mostly plasmas) on darker scenes. It should be fine with your LCD though.

Personally, I would get Toshiba XDE for $90 from Amazon (both of these players mentioned are around the same price) as it scored well on "Secrets" review and has sharpness, contrast, and color enhancements which you may (or may not) like--at least you have the option of turning it on or off). It also has good digital audio sound quality compared to other <$100 players. It also loads fast and has fast layer changes. Downside is build quality is suspect as some power supply whines while on standby and always stretches 4:3 image to 16:9.

I have the 46" W4100 display along with the 700 Sony player. They work quite well together. One plus for the Sony player is HDMI control. If you use a HDMI cable you'll be able to push Play on your Sony DVD and your TV will come on and select the correct HDMI input. Also when you turn your TV off the DVD player will power down. It's really quite handy. You'll need to enable HDMI control on both the player and your TV.
You can also use your TVs remote to control the basic functions of your Sony player and of course the Sony players remote will also control basic functions on your TV.
I have no complaints about the PQ or AQ, but then again I've never seen a Oppo;)
