View Full Version : MY PS3 Died :( ....What is the best deal out there?
I was moving my gear to paint the little recessed area where my gear is in and then bam the PS3 falls to its death from ~6 ft. I look down  to only see little black pieces of black plastic on my floor.
My KZ2 game is trapped inside and the machine won't turn on. Anyone open a Bluray Drive in the PS3? I am wondering if I can rescue my KZ2 game.
I'll probably end up getting one the new plain 80G ones from Dell for about 319bucks after I pay Uncle Sam my dues. :p
Is there a better deal out there that is not CC related?
Holy crap...are these the weak shell 40 gigs?, I always thought those were rather weak in terms of shell.
moshock 03-17-09, 08:32 PM dell with 20% off console coupons is your best best. watch slickdeals.net for deals.
joeblow 03-17-09, 09:57 PM If you're good with credit, you may want to take advantage of this deal. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1129202)
Sorry to hear about your PS3 death in the family <solemnly pours a 40oz onto the sidewalk>.
Your PS3 didn't die, it was MURDERED !!!!!

Murder is a type of death. Death = Die.
GFelizardo 03-18-09, 04:54 AM You can definitely get that KZ2 game out of there. There are videos on Youtube on how to do it. Search for "PS3 Blu-ray drive".
If the drive and other pieces are intact. you can use those for spare parts down the road if your new PS3 develops problems. Not all pieces are compatible between models, so you'd have to research a bit. Or you could sell the parts on eBay.
phipp01 03-18-09, 07:07 AM Its really easy to get the game out. All you need to do is just take some screws out and you'll have the BD in your hands. When mine died CODW@W was stuck inside and I opened it up to get the game out.

why would a 40gb shell be any different from an 80gb or 60gb or 160gb shell?

It wouldn't be.

Do yourself a big favor and ignore Gslide's comments... sometimes he talks without thinking.
rjsanc30 03-18-09, 12:40 PM FWIW - The rumor mill is buzzing yet again about a potential price drop "coming soon" - one article mentioned March 22nd (the day before GDC begins) - link. ( http://www.psu.com/Rumor--PS3-price-drop-coming-soon-News--a006711-p0.php)
Again, I know this is pure speculation, but it maybe worth waiting till sometime next week to place an order.
Oh yeah....little known fact abut the PS3 shell...when you do order/pick-up your replacement PS3 make sure the model number ends in a "5" - those units use an intermetallic compound with aluminum for their shells. It provides superior strength, highly scratch resistance and highly heat resistance...I thought everyone knew this...:)
KingShorty 03-18-09, 12:43 PM If they announce a price drop, I think they'll save it for E3. They may announce a PS2 pricedrop at E3 as well.
Back on topic... shame on the OP for not placing the black box of beauty (B3 :D) in a safe and secure place before moving stuff around.
Epic Fail!

Don't sell gslide short. I am certain he personally stress-tested the shells of every PS3 model. Naturally, the 60gb had the best shell because it's the only real PS3, the other models don't even exist.

Unfortunately the 60GB has an obvious design flaw that causes them all to get the LOD. All of them! A flaw that is not in the identical 20GB model through some sort of temporal tachyon displacement.
newer models were redesigned with a in-case resident gerbil to make repairs as necessary.

Tht kind of what I was thinking:confused:
Thanks for the condolences.
Your PS3 didn't die, it was MURDERED !!!!!
Well it was not premeditated. More like involuntary machine slaughter. :D
mcclayton 03-18-09, 02:36 PM There's a rumor that the price will drop soon.. Like next week (Assuming this.. As GDC 2009 is next week too I think).. But if you can't wait just try and get yourself a new one with a discount.. Like the dell coupon some1 posted about.
bryansj 03-18-09, 03:14 PM If you paid in full with a credit card then you may have double the warranty (what is the PS3 warranty anyway?). My laptop was almost two years old (1 year warranty) and was purchased with a Circuit City Visa card. The sound went out on it and I got it fixed through the Visa warranty protection service. I'm not sure if it matters that you dropped it or not.
