I'm sorry for posting a new thread but I haven't found the answer to my issue yet. Here's my issue which seems to have happened to a large number of people.

So I connect my 360 and PS3 by HDMI to the receiver and the receiver out to the TV. I adjust a bunch of settings via some online resources and the picture not only looks better now but the sound on the 360 is much better. Problem is that I'm not getting any sound from my PS3. I play my 360 and the picture/sound are great. I play my PS3 and the picture is great (have Dark Knight on blu-ray on right now) but there's no freakin sound.

On the settings menu I have it set to LPCM. Here's the interesting thing. When I first hooked up the HDMI to the receiver, it recognized all of the supported video outputs automatically. I saved it, ran the blu-ray, and no sound. So I go back and look at it again and now it's only picking up 2 CH sound. I manually turn on all the sound outputs (which I shouldn't have to do) and it still doesn't work. I'm not getting any sound at all even in the menus.

I've gone through all the settings on my receiver and the PS3 twice now and it's still not working. I'm sure there's something simple that I'm missing as tends to happen with this stuff but why would my 360 work fine and not my PS3?

I have the 58" 850u Panny Plasma and I'm using the Onkyo SR806 receiver by the way (newer 80gb PS3). Also, I don't want to run HDMI to the TV and Optical to the receiver because I want to take advantage of Dolby TrueHD etc....

Any help is greatly appreciated as it's driving me nuts!

I'm not getting any sound at all even in the menus. This bit's confusing. So, the PS3 auto-detected your sound outputs and initially selected all the correct outputs. Then when you play a bluray it de-selects all those outputs and you have to reselect them? If you only select 2-channel or DD or DTS, you're fine, yes?

It sounds like it's only outputting things that it can send over optical/bitstream. Check in your PS3's sound settings for bluray/DVD playback and make sure that you have the sound output set to LPCM rather than bitstream. This is a separate menu/selection from the list of regular sound outputs and different from the HDMI/optical setting.

Otherwise, this could be something going on at the receiver end. Your 360 is able to output sound because it outputs DD, not LPCM, so that doesn't in itself narrow the problem to the PS3 unfortunately. Unlike the PS3, the 360's audio output is no different over HDMI than it is over optical.

If the above doesn't work, re-run the PS3's auto-detect sequence by doing a full reset (while turning on the PS3, hold down the power button until you hear a second beep). That should re-detect everything automatically. But make sure the bluray/DVD audio playback is set to LPCM rather than bitstream if you're wanting those HD audio codecs.

Thanks for the reply. Just so I'm clear, I never had any sound from the PS3 with HDMI so far. When I first hooked it up and I went through the sound settings (HDMI), it automatically setup all the sound frequencies. I had no sound. So I went back to it to check it again and it only had the 2 channel sound detected....but still no sound.

Oh and I've had it set to LPCM. I've gone through all the settings using the stickied thread about PS3 audio/video.

I guess I'll try the reset tonight like you suggested. Does that affect anything else though?

The switched audio options deal sounds really weird to me (as I'm sure it does to you). It initially set up with everything, then it mysteriously switched itself to only 2-channel? Odd. First I've heard of that happening. Is there no audio for everything or just for blurays?

Some other suggestions:

1) Try bitstreaming audio over HDMI just to check your connections.

2) If you want to isolate the problem you need to try hooking up your PS3 directly to your TV via HDMI. Check to make sure the audio works properly there (2-channel or otherwise). If it works there, then it might be something on the receiver end.

3) Try using a different HDMI input on your AVR. Since you know the 360 one is working, try that one.

4) Try a different HDMI cable (swap the 360 one) just to be sure it's not the cable.

5) Check the manual for your onkyo to make sure there's not some other random setting you need to change in order to get LPCM from that input (passthrough, listening modes, etc.)

Thanks for the detailed replies, I appreciate it.

1. Will try Bitstream tonight just to see.

2. I had my PS3 hooked to my TV and my TV out to my receiver prior. It all worked fine (but I can't use the proper sound setup then).

3. The HDMI port worked fine before but yes, I will switch to another tonight just to be sure.

4. Yep, thought about that too although it HAS worked before as well.

5. Will do. I went through every single setup function in the receiver last night though.

Sigh.....

Oh and there's no audio at all. No menu sounds, no games, no dvds/blu-rays.

Got it working.

I switched the cables with the 360 and it worked. So I tried the 360 with the prior PS3 cable and no sound. Went into the receiver and I found that in the menu at some point I had changed the "DVD" setting to look for an Optical connection.

Fixed that, switched the cables back, and everything was good. Tried the Dark Knight in Dolby TrueHD and BAM, excellent surround sound.

Thanks for the replies anyway bro. I knew it would probably be something stupid that I missed.

Easy to do with today's fancy schmancy receivers with configurable input switching.

Damn I was going to ask if your settings in you AVR was setup correctly. You beat me to it.

What's really stupid is that I went through every single setting TWICE the other night before coming online to post - and missed it both times. :p

Finally when the 360 didn't have sound I knew it had to be the receiver obviously so I took another look and saw that "DVD" output was set to Optical.

But yeah, rather it be something silly like that than something actually broken. :D

Take care guys.
