View Full Version : Anyone else buying up cheap new HD DVDs?
FoolintheRain 03-20-09, 12:23 AM Just curious if I was the only one getting the itch to purchase all those cheap ($5-$10) HD DVDs on the internet ? I would post the link, but at work and don't have it with me at the moment.
Anyway, I figure they are almost getting cheaper than renting a title once at (name your rental place here)! Anyway, just wondered if anyone else was grabbing a bunch of these?
Quentin2 03-20-09, 12:40 AM Take a look in the software section, everyone's doin' it!
I am.
You should buy some, too. All the cool kids are doing it! :)
i just bought 4 hd-dvd's for the same price it took to buy 1 blu ray!
yes! its going great!
FoolintheRain 03-20-09, 03:28 AM sorry for the post in the wrong section...moderators can move or delete if there is already a similar post. My bad :)
erick granato 03-20-09, 06:38 AM bought 3 for $6.99 each 2 weeks ago. What a bargain
I`ve even start buying not so cheap HD DVDs, underworld cost me over 20 euros. possibly I will pay serenity beetween 15 and 18 euros.
AmishFury 03-20-09, 02:34 PM i've bought at least 21 hd dvds in the last few months spending no more than $7.99 for any one of them
most of them from traderbora for $5 each
Absolutely,
In fact it is the fire-firesales going on now that have sparked my re-interest in HD-DVD. I now can get some titles I have been wanting for cheap. I've got six coming from Amazon here in the next few days plus just picked up the Ultimate Matrix Trilogy all for about 60 bucks. Bring it on baby!
I love the Mummy and Mummy Returns. 10 bucks for HD-DVD if I went Blu 37 bucks. With 27 bucks left over that is five more HD-DVD's! Whoo Hoo! No question in my mind HD media is HD media either Red or Blu. I will eventually get blu but why not get as much red as possible for cheap.

RTROSE
I've bought 117 new movies in the past 2 months for an average of just over $4.00 each. There's a seller on the bay that has a flat <$3 shipping charge no matter how many you buy and a pretty good selection. (around 140 titles)
Never been much of a movie buyer before, but these deals are irresistible!
Wish XA2s would drop some more, I'd like to have one, just to have it, but I watch ZERO sd DVDs (or sattelite, for that matter) so the upconverting isn't a plus for me.
mondaycurse 03-20-09, 03:49 PM Right after Christmas, I bought a BH200 on clearance at Best Buy slightly sarcastically thinking "Cool, I can play HD DVD if I get a few."
Since then, I've bought a total of 42 movies plus Heroes Season 1 in the last 3 months and have paid only $220. Blu ray? Two movies for about $15 each.

You may be late arriving at the party, but there's still enough cake to go around!:D

Fast Time at Ridgemont High.
My Blu-Ray Collection got bigger than my HD-DVD collection yesterday.
361 High-Def movies and counting.

Quentin2 03-23-09, 09:26 PM Just got Heroes, Season 1 for $10, pretty amazing for a 7 disc box set that listed for $100. Brand new. And ordered Battlestar Galactica for $10 also. I know BG has some packaging problems and not the best PQ but TV series are few and far between on HD DVD so why not go after 6 and 7 disc sets for $10! Previously Blade Runner and Planet Earth were my only 5 or more disc packages.

And don't forget Star Trek TOS. A tad more expensive right now, but well worth it.

I'd love to find it for a great price, WP, not likely though. Tempting even at $70...
a friend of mine bought me in NYC dead silence.

I guess I lucked out. Got mine at Costco for $55 a while back. But $70 is only a little bit more than $55. And there are 10 discs in that set.
I'm not trying to tempt you, of course. :D

yes man, thank you very very much, you are a trooper. he has seen there eastern promises which I already have, army of darkness, breach, brokeback mountain, land of the dead...as we were exchanging text messages and he couldn`t write me everything which was there I told him to buy me a regular exotic dvd, which for him was a blaxploatation with fred williamson, hell in harlem.

The blu version is coming out in late April. That might depress the price on the red version and make it more affordable.
Nosferax 03-25-09, 08:30 AM The Zellers store near my home has finaly put its HD-DVD in the bargain bin. I got Transformer, Beowulf, Top Gun and another one I can't seem to remember the name at the moment. All for $6.95 Cdn each.
The Kmart in my town (very small town) still has I am Legend for $30. Part of me wants to walk up to the manager and see what the deal is. One HD DVD in the entire store and they are still asking the same price as the Blu.
20 and counting in the last month!!!! Free s/h rules!!!!

Got over 70 HD DVDs over the last year.
You know one of the things that is killing me with the cheap HD material out there now is the WOW comments from family and friends.
I have a dedicated theater room and of late have been playing several movies I've picked up. The usual comment is "Wow blu-ray looks fantastic I need to get a player one of these days". When I tell them that they've just watched HD dvd (you would figure the disc intro would give it away :p) and how cheap the players were at one time to get into this hobby the usual answer is "I wish I'd known".
It probably wouldn't have made a difference but oh to think if Toshiba had made a better effort to get that name recognition out there in the begining.
AmishFury 03-31-09, 04:23 PM just bought 3 more... i keep trying to say i'm done buying HD DVD... but then i buy more

Where?
Anyone not buying cheap HD-DVDs is out of his mind. They are significantly cheaper not only from BD titles but from DVDs as well. Why pay more for SD picture on DVD?
Transformers was sold on Inet for $1.
davcole 04-07-09, 09:21 AM I had thought I was done but i've picked up a few. Titles i'm looking for are the one's with a lossless track or ones already out on BD that where both formats don't have a lossless track or I don't figure when released on BD that it will make much of a difference.
Some of the titles i've gotten:
Matrix Collection
Sneakers
The Game
Unforgiven
The Fugitive
I'm really hoping I can score some of the following super cheap:
Purple Rain
Pan's Labrynth
Twister
Trading Places
Carlito's Way

Thanks for the tips on the pricing. I'm really trying to stay around that $5/$6 on all titles, particularily Purple Rain which is going to come out at $16.99 retail on BD when Warner does their reprice.

Will look for the Twister price drop.
mondaycurse 04-08-09, 02:53 PM Will look for the Twister price drop.
It's a rarer later release with much more limited quantity, so I wouldn't bet on $5 anytime soon. By then we'll all be spending our money on another dead, inexpensive format :).

The traderbora storefront on Amazon has loads of titles for under 5 dollars.
davcole 04-21-09, 07:01 AM I was able to get Purple Rain for under $4 and Season One of Heroes for $12.

Heroes Season One $9.99

Try in store pickup, Burbank and most other Fry's have the Heroes in stock. Pan's Labrynth is much harder to find.
Fry's still has quite a few movies for $5.99 and $6.99 so if you have a store close by, in store pickup is a deal.

davcole 04-23-09, 12:00 AM I wish I were near a FRY's cause i'd go for that deal on PAN'S LABRYNTH
I ordered 33 of these from traderbora last week for an average of $4.90 per disc. Several of them are not on blu yet.
I just ordered the HP Box set from inetvideo. They have come down again, and I was going to purchase when they were $50.00. Got a great deal and some of the discs there are now $1.99.
Things are still good in the "red camp" if you ask me.

they're a good place for HDDVDs, probably the first place you should look.. but for the newer Bluray stuff, check Amazon..
Petey Parker 05-07-09, 10:59 AM I was at Five Below yesterday and they had a few titles. I didn't pick anything up though.
I noticed: Animal House, Fast Times, Chuck And Larry, Accepted, and a couple other titles that I can't remember.
dragonyeuw 05-07-09, 05:28 PM I was ohhh so close to getting back into the HD DVD world today. Saw Hulk, Fast and the Furious, Mummy Returns and Bourne Supremacy for 16 pounds(about 25 dollars). I'm giving it some real thought. I can pick up a bunch of used HD DVDs and 360 addon for about the price of 3 blurays...
tiger_qc 05-08-09, 06:31 PM Hulk, Fast and the Furious, Mummy Returns and Bourne Supremacy for 16 pounds(about 25 dollars).
16 pounds for all 4?
I bought at least 100 HD-DVDs between $1.99 and $3.99 US with free shipping. I paid $25 CAD for Planet Earth but beside the 3 Steelbooks that's the most I have paid for an HD-DVD.
Cheers,
Gui.

Yes for all 4, prices were:
Mummy Returns 6
Fast and Furious 4
Hulk and Bourne 3 apiece
guitarplayer 05-10-09, 04:07 PM I have been buying them up when I find them. I have most of the ones I actually really wanted, though, so I have slowed down on purchases, but I still pick them up here and there. I need to check a couple of our local Kroger stores again. I happened in one I don't go into that often the other day (they have a starbucks and I needed my vanilla bean frappe fix, haha) and they had a bin with several titles for $6.00 or so and below.
Quentin2 05-11-09, 05:57 PM I've slowed down buying HD DVDs as I now have a good sized library of favorites. Right now I have American Gangster on the way and there are a handful of titles I'm waiting for a good price. If that happens, great - if not it wasn't meant to be. And though it would be nice to have the very latest releases I'm in no rush for Blu either.

All good choices... "The Searchers," "Grand Prix," and "Corpse Bride" are reference quality.
I've run out of titles I want. The last title I got was "Rocky Mountain Steam Trains," from Green Frog Productions.
So this HD DVD turkey is done. I will kind of miss the feeding frenzy, but my wallet won't. :)
dragonyeuw 05-15-09, 09:12 AM I've got brand new copies of The Mummy, Mummy Returns, Face off, The Bourne Identity, Doom, Fast and the Furious, Liar Liar, Heroes Season One, The Rundown, and Serenity for $45 in my amazon cart. My finger's twitching.... only thing is I need to buy a HD DVD player and I don't really want to buy a standalone. Frys has the xbox 360 addon for $39.99 but I'm a bit hesitant to rely on the 360 given it's issues(though mine is a Falcon model, hopefully more reliable). Man oh man the prices.....

Wow very good choices there, the Mummy movies along with Fast and Furios and Serenity looks outstanding on HD DVD.
I own most all of the domestic titles I want. I am still on the hunt for some imports like Equilibrium, Brotherhood of the Wolves, Hoodwink, and others.

I'm on the lookout for Blade Runner, A scanner darkly, Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum, Matrix Set, and Planet Earth. All the movies in my cart average like 4 bucks per, and the Heroes set is like $8.98. As a point of comparison I looked up the prices for the bluray versions of each movie in my cart and the total cost was near $200.
cobolisdead 05-15-09, 12:41 PM I get a few on occasion, but I haven't seen any good deals on ones that I don't own lately.
dragonyeuw 05-16-09, 03:04 PM Well I 'eased' my way back into HD DVD today. Picked up TMNT for 3.99 pounds( is this title rare or something? I see it going for a lot more on amazon.) Looking forward to ordering some more HD titles at 1/4 the price of their blu ray counterparts. Life's too short, enjoy it....

That was Thursday. Today I bought "Spy Game," "Meet the Parents," "Meet the Fockers," "Midnight Run," "Field of Dreams," "Erin Brokovich," "Meet Joe Black" and "Fletch" for less than $32 shipped from Traderbora. That's 18 HD-DVD's for a little less than $85. Somebody hold me!!! :D
mondaycurse 05-17-09, 07:38 PM I've been keeping track of all my prices and right now I'm at 68 titles with an average of $6.10 a title with some I paid more than average for (specifically NIN and The Motorcycle Diaries).
I just got to the point where I need to build my shelving instead of this tiny bookcase :).
davcole 05-17-09, 10:41 PM I should receive my Amazon via Traderbora order of 3 HD DVD's tomorrow:
FOUR BROTHERS
INSIDE MAN
CARLITO'S WAY
I guess I had overlooked the fact that both CARLITO and INSIDE MAN have TRUEHD tracks, so in essence i'm getting the same as the BD's will be. Since FOUR BROTHERS was under $4 and i'd like to see it again, I figured why not buy. The BD has a lossy audio encode just like the HD DVD, in fact with the 1.5 DD+ the HD DVD may have a slight sonic advantage. We'll see.
I've still got about 4 more on my list if I can score them under $6.
totalownership 05-18-09, 04:13 AM I wonder if traderbora is laughing all the way to the bank with us. I just finished dropping 70 bucks on 16 HD-DVDs with him. lol. Next wave of crazy spending I'll do with him will probably be the last run since I pretty much got everything I want to see from him. Just a few other titles and then I don't know where to turn. I guess it'll be back to buying one bluray every 2 to 6 weeks. I'm going to see if I can pawn off this upscaling DVD player and possibly get a HD-DVD player for the pawned off money. Right now I only have the capability to play HD-DVD's in 2 rooms but the bed room I don't.
dragonyeuw 05-18-09, 11:04 AM I have an order of 10 from Traderbora in my cart right now. Today I picked up The Bourne Supremacy for £3 and Jimi Hendrix live at Monterey for £2. Just getting back into HD DVD again with all the cheap prices. I had a used 360 addon in my hand today at CEX exchange store for £20, only to find that it didn't have the boot disk, whichever salesperson that took it 2 days ago didn't get it from whomever traded it in:mad:. But I have one coming from another CEX outlet with Bourne Ultimatum next week.
chroma601 05-18-09, 01:15 PM I just ordered the Harry Potter Years 1-5 Limited Edition Gift Set from Amazon in HD DVD, price was under $40 including shipping. Wow...

I should have said I'm sending them to a friend in the US that I'm visiting in a month. My bad....
vidoprof 05-22-09, 05:21 AM I just bought 16 movies from there averaging $6.50 a movie, including the Matrix trilogy for $25.
Shipping really adds to the costs of course but after everything $6.50 a movie ain't bad. Thankfully I have a combo player.
I have actually NEVER watched a movie on a HD DVD or Bluray so we will see how much different this is going to be for me.

totalownership 05-22-09, 05:39 PM If you guys are using Amazon you know you can sign up for a trial run of Amazon Prime and get free 2 day shipping for a month. You can then decide to cancel if you choose.
davcole 05-23-09, 06:45 AM The Box sets are the real winners. I was able to get Matrix for $25 and the first season of Heroes for $12. Right now you can get an even better bargain on them.
PhillipH 05-24-09, 05:51 PM I just bought these HD-DVD's from Amazon. They are all new in original shrink wrap.

jdmac29 05-24-09, 11:50 PM I picked up the 1st 4 HP movies off ebay avg price around $10 a piece. I got the 5th movie for free with my hd dvd player purchase. I like the IME tracks that blu does not offer on these. I also ordered T3 today for 9.98 since the blu version had encoding issues and was about $5 higher everywhere I had seen.I did not think I would buy any more hd dvd's after they lost the war but the prices are better than the counterpart blu versoins and some of the features are still better today.

Ovation 05-26-09, 01:57 PM Picked up the Complete Matrix set for 19.99$ (not as cheap as it's been at times, but cheaper than the single release of The Matrix on BD that I was contemplating--I can live without the digibook photos in exchange for three movies at less than the price of one).
s2mikey 05-28-09, 03:10 PM I grabbed Red Dragon for like $7 bucks to my door. Great transfer and a solid "prequel" to Silence of the Lambs which I have on blu-ray.

I have been buying some new ones cheap. Not everything, just movies that I really like. I would like to find Twister at a cheap price, but apparently not many were printed and are harder to find, thus keeping the prices up.
Heli Pilot 06-24-09, 11:37 AM Frys has the xbox 360 addon for $39.99 but I'm a bit hesitant to rely on the 360 given it's issues(though mine is a Falcon model, hopefully more reliable). Man oh man the prices.....
For $39.99 you can't go wrong, even if your Xbox RRoD's you can still move the HD Drive on Fleabay, and pick up a stand-alone, or sell off the HD DVD's. I've been going to iNetvideo.com, good prices, and a nice selection.

cobolisdead 06-27-09, 03:19 PM I think my problem is that I've got all the ones that are out there that I want that are being clearanced out. Not too much left at the usual places for a decent price.
Quentin2 06-27-09, 05:24 PM Yeah, me too. I have almost all I need so it's hard to put together enough titles from one place to qualify for free shipping. To get those last few I want, I'll have to pay a bit more but still a good deal compared to the SD DVD version.
just bought the other day in Turin, Italy an american werewolf in london for 6 euros at a gamestop.

also just ordered a couple more

The image quality of this movie is no better than SD. At least the USA version.

it seems to me it is better than the euro dvd which I have seen a couple of years ago that was not good at all, so this way at least I have the film for the first time. it`s not spectacular by any means, but at a glance it seemed fine. possibly they made a new encode. this one has the time bar when you pause it, did the US version have it too? besides it was the only one interesting I have seen at the gamestop where I bought it. the selection was only universal titles, maybe 10 or 12 of them.

I don't know... Jenny Agutter in HiDef looked real good in the buff. :D
Seriously, though dark scenes look average and not much better than the latest SD DVD, they are loaded with atmosphere (dark, rainy, gloomy England). And many parts of the movie look great. I wouldn't use it to impress friends but am glad I could buy one of my favorite movies in HD at such a great price.
leem6453 07-10-09, 10:15 PM I bought Superman Returns and Fast Times at Ridgemont High both for around $6 new at Amazon Marketplace. I'm loving these deals!
Due to the recent sale at inet (and DD, and Amazon, and Discovery), I think I have finally completed my last HD purchases.
How many you ask? More than I thought I would ever buy...but at $3, $4 and $5 a pop, it's really hard to resist the temptation. You can't get DVD's for that price. I'm up to 450 HD titles (that's it...really) and 150 BD titles (almost all at $10 each...not as sweet as HD...but who's complaining?). :D
rdunnill 07-17-09, 07:58 PM I added Galaxina to my collection. It was cheap and not available on Blu-ray.
Quentin2 07-17-09, 08:10 PM Just got Deliverance for $10 and bought a "like new" (fingers crossed that is true) Star Trek TOS Season 1 for $50, both including shipping. Didn't expect to get either but those were pretty good prices.
That's probably it for me. Until the next good deal comes along... :D
Well you can just walk into Walmart and buy a brand new ST TOS S1 for like $45 anytime.
Strange that they still carry ST on HD; is there simply a glut of this title? I'll pick it up when they lower the price a bit more.

It is the only version of Season 1 available on DVD, although I would imagine if they were to reprint it, they would be DVD only instead of the hybrid discs.

iontyre 07-20-09, 03:15 PM There was one copy at my local Walmart. I was tempted to buy...
Every single Wallyworld I go into here in Michigan has plenty of copies on the shelf.
Their online price is a rip though. I wonder if they will price match themselves?
Quentin2 07-20-09, 05:00 PM qz3fwd, you're right! My local WalMart hasn't had them every time I checked but today I was passing by another so stopped in and sure enough they had the combo version for $49.99. Oh well, so far the lightly used copy I got online seems ok.
Anybody looking for this HD DVD might want to stop in their local WW. Never know, the karma might be just right with today the 40th anniversary of the original moonwalk. Not that thingie by Michael Jackson. :D
Ovation 07-20-09, 09:05 PM For Canadians: HMV (in South Shore Montreal, at any rate) just received a shipment of about 20 titles--all selling at 4 for 20$ or 6$ each. Not the best price available, but with no shipping costs, still fairly competitive (I bought four). Some titles include the original Getaway, Transformers, The Searchers, Talk to Me, World Trade Towers, Beowulf, Unleashed, Brokeback Mountain, Animal House, Disturbia (all I can recall off the top of my head--there were at least half a dozen more). Just FYI

The funny thing is -- they actually won't! I tried purchasing an item in-store with a price match to their online price, and they wouldn't do it.

jlasich 07-23-09, 04:45 AM I just bought an LG Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo drive for my future HTPC just because of all the cheap HD-DVD movies. I picked up We Were Soldiers, Million Dollar Baby, and Friday Night Lights for super cheap; I did buy a couple Blu-ray movies as well, but darn they're expensive, even on sale. I can probably replace most of my entire library with HD-DVDs for a quarter of the cost of the original DVDs. Long live HD-DVD!

If you can replace most of your collection with the available HD DVD titles, you must have a very limited taste in movies.
I did buy a couple Blu-ray movies as well, but darn they're expensive, even on sale.
That's a relative term. Compared to HD and SD...yes. But not compared to a year or two ago (BD titles were regularly $15 and $20 back then). I have about 200 BD discs now, averaging about $10.00 a pop. In my book, that's quite reasonable.
The key is to wait for a sale...and jump. You will be relinquished to primarily catalog titles...but w/ a library of 500 DVD's, 500 HD's and 200 BD's...what's the rush? :p;) Don't get spoiled by these $2, $3 and $4 HD titles, because they're about to be a thing of the past (other than used).
