I've noticed since they changed the shows format and studio setup all the content is now letterboxed 4:3.

If they are shooting the show in 16:9 why is it not being broadcast in 16:9?

How did you notice that?

They're probably using HD cameras but not editing it in HD. The same thing appears to be true for Poker After Dark.

You have to give him a chance. I hear that Conan sucked his first 10 years too.

According to the NBC schedule, Last Call goes HD this week.

http://www.nbc.com/Schedule/?tz=ET

The NBC schedule has not previously shown Last Call in HD to my knowledge.

Yep. Once again it was that stupid windowbox presentation.

WHY!!! Why is NBC HD showing something windowboxed? Even if it is SD, if it is really 16:9 OAR, then it should be filling the damn 16:9 TV.

Carson had better not go HD before Jimmy Kimmel. That would be pretty embarrassing.

I've noticed that when Carson Daly goes on location they're using small handheld cameras which I'd imagine aren't HD cameras or are they?

icemannyr

You can shoot in HD with a small camera, more news, reality and talk shows are doing that for on location HD recording.

Carson's show might be using a camera like the AG-HVX200A Panasonic P2 HD/DV Handheld Camcorders.

Another week and Last Call is still being shown 4:3 letterboxed on NBC HD.

Do you watch Carson Daly regularly?

Another week and Last Call is still being shown 4:3 letterboxed on NBC HD.

Technically it's not letterboxed. The Last Call bug and the credits appear outside the letterboxed 16:9 frame. So while the show appears to be shot entirely in widescreen, it is not being edited/composed in HD.

Maybe it's filmed by the Sci Fi channel.

The new episodes of Last Call are being shown pillarboxed 4:3 video letterboxed on the NBC HD feed.
Is there any chance NBC will ever edit the show for broadcast in 16:9?

Probably not until production moves to Universal Studios, which last I read was not planned until next year.

Access Hollywood is probably in the same boat. They too grab all their video and present all their non-studio segments in letterbox.

Maybe HD is closer than I speculated for Carson Daly. I noticed tonight that the overlay graphics for the Last Call bug and credits are now letterboxed along with the rest of the show. Previously, they were still composed in 4:3. The production intertitles for CDP and Universal are the only remaining 4:3 elements, so obviously it's still being edited in 4:3 though the graphics are apparently being inserted on a 16:9 image.

For what it's worth, the show also appears to have started using that pseudo-film effect that many HD video productions are now using.

No idea why they're going through all this trouble when the show is not broadcast in HD. Obviously some piece of the HD production process is still missing, but I wonder why they aren't just broadcasting in 16:9 widescreen if they're bothering to format the show in 16:9.

New season started tonight. Not HD. The odds that Carson Daly is the last NBC program to transition to HD just went up quite a bit. Now that the new season has begun, only two NBC series are in SD: Days of Our Lives (which goes HD in early November) and Last Call, which has no announced transition date.

Sometimes I wonder why Last Call is still on NBC.
It must have the lowest priority and budget of any NBC show.
The interviews are shot in 16:9 but the show is produced for 4:3 letterbox.
Checking the shows schedule the last week of may and June through at least the first week of July the show is all reruns.
I would not be surprised of there are no new episodes till October.
This show might air more reruns then it does new episodes.

That does suck but you might be the only one that noticed. I think Carson Daly himself would say his show is awful. I don't even think he has a studio anymore. He just sits at a bar and for his interviews he now goes to them because no one would waste their time going to his show.

Cool, I might actually record it now! I refused to watch this show because of it's postage stamp format:( That and it's awful(to me anyway) camera work(jerky, B&W, film scratches, etc.). I guess they are(were??) trying to be artsy or cutting edge but it just turned me off big time. I'm much prefer clear HD with a steady camera any day:)
I've watched many shows just because they looked so good but Carson Daly was the only one I wouldn't watch because it looked so bad:(
Here's hoping things have changed:)

Last call may be HD but I still despise the camera work. Jerky zooms, intermittent B&W, Carson not looking at the camera when he talks, etc. etc.
Even if he has someone on that I'm interested in I'll forgo this show, just not my cup of tea:)
