I have my wdtv res set to auto hooked up via hdmi to a panasonic TC-P42X1 plasma.

No matter if I watch a 720p or 1080p mkv it always says 720p when I check the input on my tv. Even if I play a 480i xvid it shows 720p.

When I manually change the setting to 1080p my tv shows 1080p, but if I leave it on auto it always says 720p.

Is this normal??

Your plasma is only 720p capable (native). So, it just a question of scaling, whether it's done by WD TV or Panasonic (and direction of scaling; up or down).
In short, it is normal:)

Well I'm not talking about what my tv is outputing.

When you push info on this tv it shows the input, so when I put my hd receiver to 1080i it shows 1080i.

If I set my WDTV to 1080p it shows 1080p when I push info.

So are you saying if I put it on auto the wdtv can identify that my tv is 720p and it automatically scales everything to that??

That is correct, at least when connected via HDMI (composite jacks can't pass EDID info). When you force 1080p on WDTV, Panasonic is downscaling to its native resolution. The real question could/should be which box is doing a better job and whether the difference is visible at all (e.g. with well made 1080p sample).

Many 1080p TVs report 720p via EDID to be on the safe side, mind you... so even if one had a 1080p TV there is no guarantee that the resolution sent to the TV would be 1080 if set to AUTO!

Ok so am I doing the right thing by leaving it on auto?

I have the same problem and maybe this was answered elsewhere, but have a 1080p sony hdtv and when my wdtv is set to auto, my TV displays the input resolution as 720p. I forced it to 1080p/24hz and that's now what the Tv displays. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

I explained this some posts ago...talk to Sony and ask them why their FullHD TVs report 720p to be their default resolution...

anyway, WD is working on the feature where output resolution and refresh would adjust according to the file played...

Yah thats a great feature that I would love to see come to life.

I thought that's what the 'Auto' setting in resolution was supposed to do.

Let's hope the WD team continue to tweak this hardware to be much better instead of making us buy the next generation product. :)

actually, WD is not working on this. its status is currently under review, which means they havent decided if and when they will implement this. once they do, the status changes to "started", after which you can wait even more for it to actually become available.

[sorry to sound kinda pessimistic, but i truly think WD is not moving fast enough on this....just look at the list...many ideas, but only one is actually in status "started", and that not even the mosted wanted one. some are issues know from start and are still not "started" let alone be resolved...my bet is they take all these ideas and use them in the next WD player, which will have more options, better features like framerate sync and, ofcourse LAN support-> offcial WD rep told next WD will have it....if WD releases this on the current device...the new WD player wont have much to offer really...im also betting the new player will have DTS downmixing]

Come on now, isn't that what drives a lot of us? The next gen? The bigger, better solution? :)

Yes, I stand corrected...actually, WD TV should allow the user to change resolutions manually in the auto mode, but choose the best refresh automatically from the file's framerate...

Hmm, so to conclude: What does actually the "Auto" option do?

what would be nice is:

- have a framerate sync option as in the NMT players, this would be to prevent stutter by choosing the nearest framerate based on source file and (given) capabilities of your tv.

- have the option to set the output resolution to a fixed value, which basically up/down scales everything to that resolution

- have the option to set output resolution = source resolution, which doesnt scale anything but let the TV do the scaling (up or down)
(ofcourse also tv capabilities need to be taken into account....after all you cant send a 23,97fps to a pal crt tv for example)

I'm all for getting the bigger, better solution but not when I just bought my WDTV for a month. :)

Hope I get at least one good year out of this before they come out with the next gen model. I hope they come out with some groundbreaking new feature or specs too and, if possible, bug-free so we can enjoy it out of the box without experiencing any annoying issue. :D
