I am assembling a HT system. I saw a website that intends to mod the new Oppo BluRay player by removing the analog audio section of the player. When would someone use the analog output of a universal player rather than the HDMI or digital coaxial? Do I really need analog at all?

When they only have analog inputs on an old system, or if the DACs in the deck are better than the DACs in the AVR. Good deck, cheap AVR, yea. My old Panasonic A110 had much better DAC's than the AVR I had then. With my current Denon DVD and AVR, I don't hear a difference, so I stay digital.

You only need analog outputs if your reciever or pre/pro can not decode all the formats you wish to use.

Even if you don't use them, why would you even consider paying someone to remove them? Probably ruin the re-sale value of the player, and it won't result in any audible benefit.

There is a company that mods the Oppo bluray player that offers disabling of the analog section as part of overall mods: http://www.custom-ht.com/oppo.html. I was thinking of trying it.

The analog section will have no impact on the digital output. Save your money.
