View Full Version : Muffled/quiet doalog from new center channel
goblue1 03-22-09, 09:17 PM Not sure if this is the right place to post this or the Speaker forum. If this is covered in another thread, please direct me to that one.
I recently hooked up a Infinity Primus PC350 center channel and have been having some problems with it. I have watched a few blu-rays and have noticed the dialog is very flat/muffled/quiet coming out of the center. When music or louder scenes (that involved the 2 mains (P250's)) comes on, everything sounds fine. I have noticed this with Dolby True HD and DTS Master HD, both decoded by my PS3 and passed to my Onkyo 605. This is the first time I have noticed this and it is fairly obvious. Anyone have any ideas?
Note: I am crossing the PC350 over @ 80hz and ran Audessey. I increased the decibles Audessey set by 4 already and it is still muffled voices from the center. Oddly enough, it seems to be noticeable in 5.1 tracks, but not 2ch matrixed tracks.
Please help.

It is about a foot above the TV, and tilted down toward listening position. Until I get a new TV stand, I cannot move it.

You may have to compensate for that arrangement when you do the Audyssey measurements. The mic is supposed to be placed vertical and at the same level as the ear and speaker so that the sound grazes the top of the mic. If you kept the mic at ear level, the mic would detect more high frequencies from the center speaker aimed at it and would apply excessive compensation by lowering the treble.
I do not know exactly how to attack that. You could try tilting the mic for the center measurements (not easy) or repositioning the center at the same level as the other speakers just for the measurements (not ideal).
You might also consider posting this on the "official Audyssey" thread.

Thanks for the response. I did post in the Audyssey thread, but haven't got a response yet. Are you saying to tilt the mic toward the center?
Have you checked the speaker drivers and make sure that they are all working? Just a thought.
Kal Rubinson 03-22-09, 10:48 PM Thanks for the response. I did post in the Audyssey thread, but haven't got a response yet. Are you saying to tilt the mic toward the center? No, away. Imagine a straight line from the center's tweeter to the mic. That line should pass parallel to the top surface of the mic. Since the center is tilted down, the mic needs to be tilted away.

Will the Onkyo receiver let you select "mono" mode? That should direct all audio to the center speaker for a sound check.
torphoto 03-23-09, 12:08 AM A few things not mentioned, do you have another speaker to test as a center? also try the center into another output, just to make sure the speaker or the out is good from teh receiver
Make sure you've connected the speaker wires with the correct polarity, + to +, - to -. Just another thing to double-check.
As others said, try another speaker in the center to be sure that your receiver/cable chain is operating correctly.
