I am an A/V installer and am a re-seller of the popular brands of proprietary media servers like ReQuest, Imerge Escient and HP/LifeWare
I am intereted in exploring the option of using open platform hardware and putting the pieces together myself.
From my limited understanding of things it appears that Windows based systems are affected by the 4Gb file size limitations of FAT32. It seems obvious that many movies will exceed the 4 gig size when ripped to a storage device.I understand that one can format a hard drive for NTFS to get around this problem.
The issue that I see with NTFS is that it is not supported by brands like Apple TV and Xbox360. Although these brands might not be my favorite nor the favorite of many on this forum keep in mind that I need to design a system that customers will find easy to use. The vast majority of the consuming public that has a music collection does so with an i-pod based system.
So my question is this. Can these two brands still be used without having to compress the movies to fit them on a hard drive. I would prefer to maintain as much video quality at least for ripped DVD's. I would imagine that downloaded content that's purcahsed from the I-tunes store will already be compressed.
WDTV looks cool but I need component video output for whole house distribution from the equipment rack via a matrix video switch.
Any suggestions/helpful advice would be appreciated.
