Info:
This will be specifically a console gaming television with Xbox 360 (HDMI or VGA) and a PS3 hooked up. There will be no other use for this television. I play FPS (COD4/COD5/Killzone 2 etc) at a competitive level and street fighter 4 on a regular basis.

The price range:
Approx $1,000

After a variety of research, reading and what not I have narrowed it down to two TV's

Samsung
46" LCD LN-46A550

or

Panasonic
46" Panasonic TH-46PZ850U

How bright is your environment? Can you find those the same price somewhere (the 850 is typically more than the sammy)? I mean the 850 panasonic is gonna have better black levels obviously and more features, but if your in a bright environment or looking to save the world (energy wise) you could go w/ the LCD. Usually price would be the main distinguishing characteristic b/t the two, but if you can get them for the same price I'd say the 850 hands down unless you just want an LCD.

What ever you get make sure you get a display capable of VGA input and that with VGA it allows for 1:1 pixel mapping (well only if it is a 720P display, 1080 P will need to scale and that will cause blur with consoles like the Xbox 360, PS3 lacks VGA so won't matter) .

You do know that on both the PS3 and Xbox the games are all 720P right exept for a couple? Anything higher will just force scaling and cause the image to be actually fuzzier than a 720P native display.

I use a 720 set (Bravia) almost exclusively for gaming and the 360 w/VGA and with 1:1 pixel mapping it is pixel sharp just like a PC monitor.

it is a basement environment with very little natural light coming in. I have found both tvs around that price on dealnews.

The one used as a gaming monitor is a 4 year old Bravia XBR 32". I don't remember the model no. but it doesn't matter as it is not made today anyway. I sit like 3 ft away so it is a decent size that close. That is also why plasma won't work at that distance for me as I can see the dither.

The Panny, for sure. Period.

BTW, why not give our AVS Sponsors a serious crack at your purchase? Checkout the links above, or better yet give'em a call. Their rep is 100% solid, and they stand behind the deal, which is just as important as pricing.
