View Full Version : Near DVD quality/features with a PS3
HI all,
First time post here, been readign a bunch though. I have a question for you that I haven't been able to find a clear answer to. I have a PS3 that I am streaming my movies to. I have tried Tveristy, Nero and am currently using the PS3 Media server software. My question is what do I need to do to keep my DVD's as close top DVD quality and keep as many of the features such as subtitles and chapters while streaming them??? How should I rip them, to what format and with what program. Currently I'm streaming ISO files wwith the PS3 mediaserver software but it still doesn't have chapters and when going through the file structure on the PS3 it will list all the parts of the ISO.
Any suggestions would be great. I'm new to all this and may not be setting the configurations properly.
Thank you all in advance.

Really? I rip my SD video to .ISO, but can't say for sure that your situation is unusual, because I don't keep all the extra stuff like chapters and menus, and I'm not streaming .ISO to PS3 via PS3 mediaserver...so all of those factors could change your outcome. But, in general, I would almost bet that it has something to do with your ripping process. The whole idea behind .ISO is to just copy an image with the file-structure of the DVD intact. What do you rip with, and have you checked some of your settings?
Everyone's got their favorite ripper, but for SD .ISO I don't have any reason to go beyond what DVD Shrink does so well. You might give it a try, or give some feedback on your current method. OTOH, someone might chime in, who is streaming .ISO to PS3 via PS3 mediaserver, and confirm that something about that process makes your experience typical.

your problems are all a function of the UPNP Servers since the PS3 does not play DVD's. If you got a streamer that supported ISO's or DVD Vob rips you would not have these issues....
Unfortunately the PS3 is just not a very good streamer. I have 2 of em and think they are great for BD's and Games.....

I have been using DVDdecrypter to rip the DVDs down to the ISO. Is there a better one to be using??? I have DVD shrink as well, but have not tried it as I do not want to compress the files any, HDD space isn't an issue.
I don't really need the movie menus or extra features while watching, just the movie itself with the ability to jump chapters.

The streaming software I'm using now is the PS3mediaserver software found here: //code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver <=="removed http cause i don't have enough posts to post a URL"
I found that it cover more file format options then others. I have tried Tversity and I do like it because of the "extras" it has like streaming to cell phones ect... I understand that the PS3 is limited as far as its visual interface to the media software.
The basics I would like to have are:
Thumbnail of the movie, I would preffer the movie cover and not a clip of the movie
The ability to skip chapters for those time when I want to start in the middle of a movie and not have to wait through scannig ahead.
I would like the display on the PS3, when streaming an ISO, to just display the movie title as an option and not a break down of the files associated with it.
I will try and post a pic of this so you understand.
I realize that there is no perfect solution yet, but to me these are basic requests and i'd be surprised that there isn't any way to do it.
Thank you for replying and helping out.

I understand completely... It just does not do what you want it to....
DVD Shrink and Decrytper, AnyDVD, DVD Fab all work fine....
I have used TVersity and PS3 Media Server as well with the PS3 and a few others...
XBMC has been doing this stuff for years but it does not exist on the PS3 at the moment. you can choose not to beleive me but its good info.
get a used xbox and it will do everything you want but it wont play HD video videos... check out the thread here if you want to know more about it. it also runs on PC as well....

I'm not sure i want to get another game station, so I may keep that in mind for a last resort.
Ok, so the PS3 won't do what I want it to do. Are there any devices/software out there that will do these things???
So for now, i'm going to have to settle with converting my ISO files down to mpgeg or avi files. Do you recomend any software for this??? Also I will be starting my Blue Ray collection so I would like to do the same with these too.
sean_w_smith 03-27-09, 11:38 AM AutoGK and Handbrake are popular choices....
read around this forum some. There are a variety of choices that do what you want....

SeanI can't comment on what YOUR PS3's do, but mine plays VOB's just fine......;)

Do you play them from a streaming server or from the internal HDD???
I'd have to say the PS3 is a decent media sever and if you have a capable PC to stream HD content to your PS3, with a wired connection (WiFi con't cut it for HD) it should do what you ask. Personally, I use DVD Shrink to rip a single VOB (check settings) and strip out subs and extras. When viewing the VOB file in the XMB Video folder it should be one entry instead of multiple. I have been able to use the chapter function with varied results using this approach, although I'm currently using an older (10.4 IIRC) version. Maybe check out the dedicated PS3 Mediaserver (http://ps3mediaserver.org/forum/index.php) forum and submit your questions/concerns directly to the devs. Also there is a thread here at
AVSforum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=15567629#post15567629) that might prove helpful too. BTW in that thread they talk about thumbnail generation and someone also made a real nice template for cover art, which can be used to create your own library.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't tried ripping straight to a single vob file. I'm still really new to this and since there are so many option out there it really confuses me. I'll try the single vob file and see how it goes. Just as an FYI I am using a wired connection and the streaming pc is using an AMD 4800+ set up so I think it should do ok with a single HD stream.
