Please guys!!!! I need to know quick which does a better job at up conversion, should I sell my current Marantz dv-4001 for the denon or keep it?
Has anybody experienced both players first hand for that ultimate answer. All I know is that so far with what I've experienced using the Marantz is phenomenal in terms of picture quality even thought it can only upscale up to 1080i unlike the denon.
Thanks!!!!!
p.s.
I don't really care about the universality of the denon, for me the most important and for most is the picture quality and sound. Also which unit is more robust in terms of built quality?
THANKS!!!!

PLEASE GUYS I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP ON THIS ONE, PLEASE BE QUICK SINCE I HAVE A SHORT TIME TO DECIDE.
thanks!!!!
Personally I would stay with the Marantz till you need DVD-A and SCAD playback. In reality you will only see the difference if the DVD player is better at upconverting than your TV. Between the Denon and the Marantz, I doubt you will see any difference. With my Samsung HL61A750 I actually let the TV handle the upconversion and prefer that to the player upconverting. Hope this helps.

thanks for the info, I have already ordered the denon for my mom since she needed a new player. I will test them both for picture quality when it arrives. It will be very tough for the denon to produce a picture quality surpassing that of the Marantz.....we'll see!!!!!
I know in terms of sound quality, the denon will trounce the Marantz since it supports dvd-a/sacd using Burr Brown dac's.
I will post my findings!!
unfortunately the denon unlike the Marantz is not region free or able to convert pal<>ntsc.

I can't speak on the Marantz but I did pick up the Denon 1940 last week from vanns.com for 92.88 which is a steal considering it retails for 349.95. I think your Marantz only upscales to 1080i though. The Denon upscales to 1080p. If SACD and DVD audio is really important then I would go with the Oppo 980H which outputs both of these formats throuh HDMI. Unfortunately you need to use the analog inputs on the Denon. I had the Oppo briefly and I was not that impressed with the sound. Picture quality was excellent. So far I am very happy with the Denon. However if you are not having any problems with your Marantz then I would keep it.

even though the Marantz is limited to only 1080i, the picture quality is stunning, now! if the denon can surpass it with 1080p then I will keep it for myself and give the Marantz to my mom.
oh! by the way I got the 1940 for $89 with shipping included from Amazon. :D ;)
you can't beat that price but it's funny that I paid the same for the Marantz refurbished.

OneCall has it new and, even with shipping, for less than you paid - just an FYI. I'm using an 8G Kuru and the pic is good, quite acceptable, at 1080i; I prefer the TV to upscale to 1080p anyway. In addition, I really like the unit's look and its non-linear stretch feature for SD-DVD's. Sound is really good as well, although I could never discern a difference between DVD players in that regard.
EDIT: I'm talking about the Marantz.

yeah!!! I know about the OneCall deal but it was too late when I found it. It's ok, only $10 difference. My refurbished unit from accessories4less looks and performs like new. I'm surprised you think of Marantz pic quality as only good or worse acceptable since plasma'a are a lot more forgiving at displaying SD content apposed to lcd tv's. All I know is that my Marantz trounces my Sony dvd changer in every aspect. I have always been very dissatisfied from the the way dvd's looked on my Samsung lcd hdtv, always a bit blurry with colors not looking the way they should. Marantz and high quality hdmi cables changed everything, now my Lord of the Ring extended edition dvd's look near HD, truly mind boggling. Now! I hope the denon does even a better job @ 1080p.....we'll see!!!!!

I just ordered the Denon myself for SACD and DVD-A support. So you won't get the benefits of SACD/DVD-A if you use HDMI?

So which one is better? Those two have almost same price now.

Did you get it yet? I am looking for an inexpensive player myself for sacd/dvd-a/cd. Analog connection only? Should be better sound quality like that anyway. Is it really noticable? I am using a Yamaha RXV-863. I love hdmi...for ease of hook up.
Any input...I think for 80 bones the Denon is a no brainer.
