View Full Version : best dvd player
Looking for the best current DVD player for around $100. I have a HL67a750 and a Denon 1909 receiver and a PS3. I am mainly interested in picture and sound quality. With my components what are my best options, even if just using the PS3 is best I would value any advice. Thank you.

The Pioneer DV-LX50
If you do not want to spend that much, then go for they're lower model, still beats other brands far far away...
Pioneer is the BEST you can buy Price/Quality

In the $100 price range you're really not getting much for PQ. Check for a used Oppo on eBay, the 980 will be in that range. A 67" Sammy LED really needs more than the bottom tier for PQ to see it at it's best.

Considering the OP is only looking to spend $100, recommending a $1,000 machine seems to be of little value.
I would suggest a Sony or Pioneer model. I've never had a Sony break on me and the upconverting models are rated well at that price point. Check these models out. Both can be had, especially the Sony, for under $100.
Pioneer DV-410V-K / DV-400V-K
Sony DVP NS700H (actually, the NS710H is newly released, I'm sure will be just as well reviewed as the 700H)
Would all these be better than the PS3, I really don't know. I watched a movie last night with a cheap Panasonic dvp5982 DVD player I think we bought for $30 and I thought the quality was bad. After buying all this other stuff my wife would shoot me if I bought a dvd player when we already had one. Hence the low budget. Something around 1 or 2 hundred I could slip under the radar and tell her we always had it. 50/50 chance she'd figure it out, I'll take that chance for better picture and sound.
look for a Oppo used- as soon as the 83' hits the market. alot will be on sell.
i have the 970(perfect condition)- very good PQ & SQ. You might find it about$80. ps the PS3 has to playPQ half way good....

An Oppo 980 is $190 new, and worth every penny.

Are you using a calibration disc? I would advise doing that before spending money on new gear. It can make a bigger difference.

++1. Especially the Sammy HL67a750, which with default setup is so hot it can melt ice, or your eyeballs, and make almost any image look noisy. Careful calibration will tame that beast. And remember that every input on the Sammy must be individually calibrated.
I'll also add that the PS3 is a better DVD player than any of the field at $100-200.

-BillI was actually going to go to Best Buy and buy one of these. This may seem like a dumb question, but do I have to fix any settings on the PS3 before I run one of these disks, or will the directions tell me? I've done so much reading the last few weeks that I can't see straight. For each one of my components, the threads are 5000 replies long. The TV, receiver and PS3 are all new and I figured I would start with the TV. Think I'll stick with the PS3 for DVD use until I get going. My biggest problem has been which device to set up first, seems like each of their settings are dependent on eachothers. Thanks for everyone's advice.

TOSHIBA XD-E500: $82.50 at Amazon
Save your $100 and stick with the PS3 for DVD - well use some of the $100 for a calibration disc and put the rest towards some new movies.

Absolutely. The XDE will cream ANY player in any price range. It's 80 bucks at best buy now. I bought mine for 100 and it was the best money I ever spent.
jsmiddleton4 03-28-09, 06:34 PM That is certainly your opinion. Me I did not care for the Toshiba and much preferred the Pioneer DV-410.
