Is anyone buying duplicates of his or her favorite HD DVD's at today's clearance prices?
I understand that many HD DVD lovers have purchased multiple players as "back-ups" in case their primary player goes belly up. But is anyone purchasing back-up titles in case the original gets damaged or won't play anymore?
I have a duplicate "Planet Earth," as well as a duplicate "Blade Runner" set. I bought my first copies used, but have bought new copies at "fire sale" prices. For some reason, I hesitate to sell the duplicates.

Just by mistake. I bought duplicate copies of a couple of HD-DVD's when I had bought them in a previous batch. They were cheap, so I kept them (good movies, obviously), if they had been full price, would have been returned.

If I get a good deal on a title that's wanted in trades, I'll pick up an extra. That hasn't happened yet because I'm 20 minutes late every time, but some day I'll get Bonnie and Clyde for $4 and buy 6 of them ;)

Excellent question, WP! Funny, I've been thinking about this myself - should I get dupes of cherished discs...
I did pick up a second copy of Chicago & Earth, Wind & Fire - Live at the Greek Theatre mainly because I saw it dip down to $15 (it's normally $30). I love this concert and the thought of losing it or damaging the disc would be hard to take. And I got a sealed copy of Dreamgirls because my first was a scratchy Hollywood Video rental (which plays ok). Then there's King Kong, I got an extra copy with my XBox add on. No sense selling the last two, they go so cheap but it's tempting to sell the extra Chicago/EW&F while it's worth something (plus the Blu-ray only costs $17).
I'm careful with my discs so probably won't get any more dupes. But I'll be crying if I ruin a favorite before I finally dive in to Blu-ray.

Nope. I have two duplicate HD DVDs and that is because they came with my Back-up player.

I confess that I also have a spare copy of King Kong. But the movie is worth more than the few bucks it would get me.
I try to be careful with my discs too, but sometimes I am clumsy, and then strange things happen.
I wonder how much uncertainty about future supply affects our buying these things and maybe even acquiring a copy or two.
The whole back-up mentality is rooted in insecurity. Or maybe some of us HD DVD users are simply nuts. :D

Yeah I sure am. I got in to this a year ago when I bought my 1080p DLP and craved HD media plus needed a great upconverter for SD DVDs. A Toshiba was just the ticket as it was so much cheaper than a $400 Blu-ray back then. Figured to get maybe 20 cheap HDs and upconvert DVDs for the rest.
But since then I've bought about 200 HD DVDs because you can't ignore the price. Great movies, too. Too much money for media but they're just jaw dropping on a large screen. I have no will power... :D
Put me in the no column as well. I have to seriously push myself not to buy crap when the discs are so cheap. Honestly if something goes bad I'll go with the other format if need be.
I have already tried to clear some space from my standard discs when possible. With used copies being sold so cheap from BB, HV, Movie G and other rental places I figure nows the time to strike while many folks have not hopped on board the HD train.

No. Most of the HD DVD titles will eventually be released on BD anyway. But, I will not double dip any of my HD DVD titles on BD as long as my player and discs continue to work.

I'm just going to trust that my discs will always work when I need them to, and nothing will happen to them. Besides, I can back them up on a HD someday, especially titles that I'm most sensitive to having fail on me.
