All inquiries wanted! Thanks We need more details....what are you going to be using for; Music or HT or both. What kind of speakers are you using? Do you want bass extension, higher SPL's or both? jpopperez 03-27-09, 03:36 PM Music, movies, and home theater. Right now I'm using some Pannys from my old htib without a sub. I want to get a sub first then speakers. My room size 9 feet wide and 12 long. Gov 03-27-09, 03:44 PM If you can stretch your budget a bit this would be better by far http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-10nsd.cfm tildawn10 03-29-09, 02:33 PM If you can stretch your budget a bit this would be better by far http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-10nsd.cfm I have the S8 with mirage nanos in a 20 x 15 room and it is very good. The bass is tight and actually sounds like a much bigger sub. Very high WAF too which always helps. If you don't need to rattle the walls but need some good base it wll do great for you. danothemanoisgoo 03-29-09, 03:14 PM If you don't need to rattle the walls but need some good base it wll do great for you. Blasphemy! jpopperez 03-30-09, 12:24 PM Bump skool 03-30-09, 01:25 PM If you have such budget and don't want to stretch if further, please consider the BIC H-100 if you're planning to watch movies primarily. The Mirage S8 is a great musical sub. However, it doesn't extend low enough for movies. jpopperez 03-30-09, 01:32 PM That sub is to much for where I wanna put it jpopperez 03-30-09, 01:33 PM To big I mean jpopperez 03-30-09, 02:19 PM bump rnatalli 03-30-09, 04:57 PM Take a look at the HSU STF-1. I believe the 15% off is still on. EDIT: Just checked, HSU is no longer having the deal. You can always try calling. batpig 03-30-09, 05:00 PM there is nothing better for the price that is as small as the Prestige S8. if you want more extension for movies, there are similarly priced but larger options as suggested above (PA-120, BIC H-100 or F12, HSU STF-1 or 2, SVS PB10) jpopperez 03-30-09, 05:32 PM The place where I want to put the sub is small so the mirage will do SpeedNut 03-31-09, 10:04 AM I'm debating the same (Mirage Prestige S8, vs. the SVS PB10) the nice plus for the Mirage for me is I don't have to pay for shipping on the wwstereo deal but have to pay for tax. The other plus is I can say "get me another one, this box is #$@(*#$&" when I go to their store an pick it up. As for the SVS I would have to pay for shipping, and it's more expensive, but everyone raves about these subs, and it's another $150 or so more until Friday, when it jumps back up to $200 more. So I need to get off of the sidelines and pick something soon. :o batpig 03-31-09, 12:16 PM don't think that the S8 can actually compete with the SVS sub. If you have a largish space and can use a bigger sub, there is no question the SVS will dominate the little S8 in output and extension. The SVS is flat to 20Hz but it's also gigantic compared to the S8 -- the footprint is 15"x21" and it's 19" high, whereas the S8 is a one-foot cube, that probably doesn't do much below 30Hz. the reason to get the S8 is that it is really good, while being good looking with a really small footprint. But it can't actually compete with a big boy sub like the SVS, so as long as your expectations are in line.... SpeedNut 03-31-09, 03:28 PM My big issue is a) the space, and b) neighbors. The space is 13x19x7 or so, but there is an opening of about 11 feet or so on the one side of the space to the rest of the basement, so there's room for dispersion there. The other major thing is the room is basically a basement with fabric draped over the walls and carpet on the concrete floor, so acoustically it's literally a cave. The other major thing is that I'm in a townhouse, so I have neighbors on either side of the space in the basement, so I want the bass without pissing off the neighbors, but I don't want to completely nerf my purchase because we're planning to move / purchase a single family house within a year, and would rather have something that could transfer into whatever new space is available in the new place. The mirage would help with the neighbor PO factor, whereas the SVS would apply well to transferring to a new space. batpig 03-31-09, 03:35 PM In a concrete basement I think you will have pretty good sound isolation. Plus when you consider the dual factors that 1) it's a big space and 2) you might be moving soon, I think your choice is clear: get the bigger sub!! If the neighbors complain just turn down the volume on the sub for the time being until you move to your own place. jpopperez 03-31-09, 04:28 PM Is there any sub thats small as the mirage thats better? If there isn't I'm going to buy the s8. I have a whole house I don't have worry about neighbors I just have my man room in a smaller room. How is the S8 with movies? I listen to music but it will be used for movies also. Thanks for the insights batpig 03-31-09, 05:25 PM I already basiclly answered your questions in post #13: there is nothing better for the price that is as small as the Prestige S8. if you want more extension for movies, there are similarly priced but larger options as suggested above (PA-120, BIC H-100 or F12, HSU STF-1 or 2, SVS PB10) The S8 will be great for the size but don't expect it to compete with larger subs for low freq. impact in movies. If you aren't a bass freak and are in a smallish room, you will probably be plenty satisfied with it, however. Reviews all seem to be excellent, so as long as your expectations are in line I'm sure it will do a great job. If you want more extension with a small "footprint", check out the cylindrical subs from SVS. nellee 03-31-09, 07:06 PM I picked one up from ebay/wwstereo as part of the Live.com 12% promo. Free shipping/no tax, and after cashback promo is the same price as the Klipsch Synergy 10 that I was eyeing but not in stock right now at Vanns. I'm new to the subwoofer "party" so how much validity do those "MSRP" prices hold for these subs? The Klipsch had a $400ish MSRP and the Mirage had a $550ish MSRP, and both are selling for less than half that now. I expect to get the sub this coming Friday/Monday.:D I currently own a 5+ year Sony 5.1 package sub that will be sent packing. I have the Klipsch Quintet set. PD50U 03-31-09, 07:49 PM This thread should be renamed "Groundhog day" as the same questions keep getting asked over and over. The same answer applies to all of these duplicate threads: you can have smallish size, low extension, low price. Pick two. jpopperez 03-31-09, 08:08 PM Just looking for some help on a sub if you don't like thread don't read it! Tuba4me 03-31-09, 08:19 PM Jpopperz, I think you should consider a larger woofer since you have your own home and won't have to worry about disturbing neighbors. You will enjoy feeling the 18-30 Hz. waves that a quality 12" could offer you for movies that an 8" couldn't. Plus a quality 12" should have the accuracy of an 8". Just my $.02 I just got an S8 because I live in a 800 sq. ft. apartment with elderly neighbors :o alphaiii 03-31-09, 10:53 PM Well, Vann's put the S10 on sale for $299. You'll get more output and lower extension than the S8, and it's still a fairly compact cabinet (14.6 x 14.6 x 15). jpopperez 04-01-09, 12:30 AM I reason I was leaning towards smaller is where I want to put the sub in the front of the room there isn't alot of room SpeedNut 04-01-09, 09:44 AM I just got an S8 because I live in a 800 sq. ft. apartment with elderly neighbors :o You just need elderly neighbors with hearing issues then it wouldn't be a problem! ;) Tuba4me 04-04-09, 11:12 PM Opened up my S8 today. Very nice packing job. It had the styrofoam braces on each corner. The sub had two big pieces of styrofoam sheet wrapped around it and taped up, then was placed inside a styrofoam-type material bag. Very good factory packaging. Very impressed with the aesthetics of the sub too. The grill has metal tabs instead of plastic ones so there should be no issue with them breaking. Very nice looking with the piano gloss finish. Tomorrow night I'll take it back to my apartment and get it hooked up. I had to have it shipped somewhere else because my apartment won't allow packages to be delivered to the office and I couldn't take off work to be there to sign for it. KevinH 04-05-09, 12:20 PM I just got mine Wed. as a 2 channel stop gap to use with my JTRs for music until I get a new HT setup. It will then move to a bedroom system. Great looking little sub and sounds very good. Keeps up with the JTRs very nicely and rounds out the sound for music very well. For a small room 2-channel rig, or bedroom system, it's a no brainer for the price. http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z312/dock44/S8-JTR-rack009.jpg BioMatrix 04-06-09, 10:46 AM I just got mine Wed. as a 2 channel stop gap to use with my JTRs for music until I get a new HT setup.
