Hi,
I have Yamaha Home Theater AV Receiver with 5 speakers, Denon DVD Player, Projector and a Flat screen TV (I have to get HD cable box from cable vision). Yamaha receiver has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI out put. I have connected the DVD player to Projector via Yamaha, using HDMI. I also have HDMI cable run from cable box to Yamaha. The problem is Yamaha system is just HDMI pass through and its HDMI port receives just Video only (it was mentioned in the user guide). For DVD audio I have connected RCA cable from DVD player to Yamaha. I am planning to do the same for cable box also. When I want to watch TV on my projector screen, how do I get audio? If I run RCA or coax cable from TV (or cable box) to Yamaha, do I have to turn the TV on when I watch the TV show on projector screen? or powering on the cable box is good enough? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

What model Yamaha AVR do you have?

If cable box > Yamaha, it will not be necessary to turn on the TV/projector to get audio from the cable box.

Be advised though, some cable boxes won't put out any audio over the digital connection when viewing a program on an analog channel. If this is the case for your cable box, you'll need to connect the L/R analog outputs to the Yamaha as well. Then, just make sure the receiver is set to auto sense the input signal so it can choose analog input or digital input as necessary.

I am a bit confused here. Does your Yamaha have optical or coax audio inputs? If so, does it allow you to associate the video from HDMI with the audio from optical or coax? That would be the preferred set of connections. Using analog L/R connections from your DVD player and cable box will limit you to stereo audio. Using optical or coax will give you DD 5.1 and DTS.

I am also confused about how your TV even fits into your system. What is it attached to and how?

From your description, you would not need to turn on the TV when watching cable on the projector. When you select the cable input on your Yamaha, it will route video out to the projector and play the audio itself.

BIslander,
Yes. My Yamaha have Optical and coax audio inputs. I will check if it allows the HDMI video and Audio from coax. I have connected my DVD player to Yamaha. I've used HDMI cable for Video and RCA cable for Audio. It worked perfect. Based on your recomendation I just ordered coax cable on Ebay. I will check it out as soon as it arrives.

Sorry for the confusion on TV set-up. My TV is one corner of my basment and my projector/yamaha room is in a different corner, almost 40 feet apart. I am planning to get HD cable box and place it right below the TV. Once I get the cable box, I will hook up HDMI cable between the cable box and Yamaha (so that I can watch big games on my projector screen). From whoareu99's reply, it looks like I have to buy one loooong coax and one looooon RCA cable (for audio) to connect the cable box with Yamaha. Please let me know if my understanding is wrong.

Sri

Cavu, Its Yamaha YHT590-BLYour AVR is actually an HTR-6130 (http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=567701&CTID=5000800&RLTID=1505&DETYP=RELATION#).

YHT-590 is the code for the bundle of the 6130 AVR plus the speakers.

Well, I admit I was sceptical but it seems you are right. This model Yamaha appears to contain a pass-through 1x2 HDMI switch and nothing more. The HDMI ports are not connected to the audio system. You do indeed have to connect the audio by a separate optical, digital coax or analog when using the HDMI to carry the video.
