View Full Version : Sub placement - How close is too close to a corner wall?

I have my front firing Velodyne in the back right corner of my den. The main viewing sofa is directly to the left of the sub. The front firing sub is firing directly into the other sofa positioned 2 feet in front of it. I have been trying to move the sub around in that small wedged area (due to the 2 sofas positioned in an L...with the sub in that spot...under a coffee table).

I know testing and experimenting are the best options; however, after my most recent adjusting...the bass response in the room is the poorest yet. I know a sub should be no closer than 3-5" to a wall; however, in this corner placement and wedged between the sofas...would it be beneficial for me to space it further from the right wall and maybe even move the sofa further away from the front of the sub?

Is the sofa up against the wall? If it is, that is your biggest problem. It's very hard to get good bass response if your listening position is against a wall. Seating should be at least 1-2 feet from the wall if possible.

And to really test for the best placement, I suggest using a Radio Shack SPL meter and the free program Room EQ Wizard (REW) to measure the frequency response at each location. This is pretty technical, though, and may be more work than it's worth for you.

I did burn a bass CD from RealTraps:

It is very difficult for a lot of rooms (based on wife and small room design) to pull the sofa 1-2 feet from the wall and have odd dead space...but thanks for the recommendation, whish i could.

I was wondering if there is other general advice that will help with this type of generic situation...such as having a sofa closer or further from the front firing area or moving the sub a little further or closer to a side wall...as opposed to a rear wall.

Just an idea, take the size of the woofer and add half to it. If you have a 12" sub move it 18 inches from both corners equally.
I have dual 15's, i have them 24" from the front and side and facing into the wall, not at the viewer...this has increased my db substantially. I also sit them on the styrofoam they came packed in, adds about 4" of height. Giver a shot.

3-5 inches from the wall isn't going to do a whole bunch. Let your beast breathe.

Why does the beast have to breathe? Are there any tests and statistics to support this idea. My cylinder Ultra is about 3 inches from my back wall, 10 inches from the side wall. It has always performed fine as far as I can tell. Of course, it is a cylinder, with a down firing driver. I don't know if that makes a difference too or not. I have wondered if pulling it out would make a difference, but it is not a good option for me and my room size, layout and such. I think a lot of folks would have a hard time placing a sub one and a half times the size of the driver away from the walls due to placement limitations anyhow.

I only meant that every inch does count. Moving the couch or sub or end table changes it. If your sub sounds good 3 inches from the wall then something is probably turned up to high. I tried mine stacked, across half way each down the wall, up front and seperate. The pictures for mine is how it is right now. They are Ed A5-350'5, 15", best sound for my room ended up being facing into the wall 24 inches away on each side.
Just keep messing around, it will keep getting better for ya.

Get an SPL db meter or RTA and find out for yourself as each room is different, now then.

Sourbeef, that is the kind of advice I was looking for..thanks!

JBLSound, i think you are right...there is no way around not getting a SPL meter to properly gauge where to position the sub. With that bass cd i downloaded from Traps, it seems it would be difficult to adjust and move the sub because every 10 seconds the sound level gets louder. I would need the volume at a constant to move the sub around to find the best location.

Also, do I have to pick 2 postions and keep moving the sub back and forth between the 2...for every 10hz increase in tone?? Then repeat those steps for various postions? That seems like it will take all day...and cause me to loose my hearing

If you just have the CD and a meter, run through all the tones at one position, writing down the SPL (C weighted, slow) at each frequency. Then move the sub to the 2nd position and do it again.

Here are a few of the pics of the room. The sub is hiding under the table. How horrible would the sub be if I placed it next to that back door....would that be worse than placing it in that back corner of the listening area?
