Hey everyone,

Over the next few weeks I am going to be doing adding some new lighting and in-wall/in-ceiling speakers to the entertainment area of our condo. Some of the work will be done by me and some of it will be done by contractors.

The majority of the work will consist of some new lighting and running speaker wire through the walls for in-wall/in-ceiling surround and back surround speakers.

Here is a picture of what I am planning:
The speaker locations are shown in red.

The left and right surround speakers will be round in-ceiling type. Their placement (relative to the primary listening position) is about 2 ft. behind and 3 ft. to either side. The back surround speakers will be rectangular and are being placed primarily for music listening since 7.1 is so rare. Placement in the corners of the room was a compromise, but it was what I could get my wife to agree on.

I am open to your thoughts and opinions on the speaker placement.

For reference, this is how my "home theater" currently looks:

The above mentioned work would turn my current 3.1 setup into a full 7.1 system.

Thanks guys! I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Since you're going to tear the drywall out I'd tack them up temporally and listen for how you like it. I've seen and read a good number of things about placement and most of that has to do with room dimensions. Sounds reflection and quality is very much affected by room size and shape.

Any how.... I mainly am writing to suggest that you use good jacketed wire. Each wire should have a jacket and then that should have an outer jacket on it. It’s good for pulling and will meet construction standards. I can give you specifics if you would like, just message me, I purchased some not too long ago and send you a link so you can order from the site or get an equivalent locally.. I found it comes in boxes of 500ft. And even comes in low oxygen and oxygen free types.

Out of curiosity, are those speakers from "The Speaker Company"? If so, how do you like them as I am looking for make a budget suggestion to a friend of mine.

Sorry to stray off topic ;)

How are you planning on framing out the apertures? You have to be careful there to avoid turning the wall into a big resonance chamber...
