View Full Version : Running Wires

I'm just about ready to start running wires for my AV System. I'm going to put all the components into an area about 12 feet from my TV (and the center of the wall). I don't have all my components yet, or even the speakers for that matter.

I want to make sure I run more than enough cables the first time. I have a BJC 45' HDMI Cable (with HDMI wall plate and flexible tail) and I plan to switch all my sources through a receiver in the AV Cabinet. There is no power in the center of the wall where I have the TV (the two existing plugs are about 3 feet on either side.

Here is what I'm thinking:

Run to TV Wall:
HDMI
2x Cat6
1x RG6
1x power

Run to my AV Cabinet:
HDMI
2x Cat6 (going to the TV wall)
2x Cat6 (going to the office - Internet/Network)
1x RG6 (going to the TV wall)
1x Phone cable
Power and DISH RG6 already in place

Run to the Office
2x Cat6 (going to the AV Cabinet)
Power, Internet, Phone, etc already in place

I'm not sure how I will run or mount my LCR Speakers, I think I might run a speaker wire to the TV wall too.

I curently have a Samsung 56" DLP (Capt Kirk pedestal). But I might get a wall mounted TV and/or Projector in the future. Another reason to run a new power line.

Am I missing anything?

I'll start another thread for the speaker setup.

Thanks

I might run more cat6 to each location. If you're going to run the cable, you may as well run enough that you don't have to do it again. When I run cables in my house I'm looking at 4-6 cat5 for each run. If I later decide to put in whole house audio or home automation or anything else, I'm pretty much covered.

...or just run a bunch of conduit to every place you can think of. That way you've always got a run from one place to another.

We are running the wires in "finished walls" I don't know if we can drill holes big enough for conduit. As is I think we will need to drill about 3 x 1" holes to run the HDMI, CAT and COAX.

Ah...I was thinking you were still in framing.

Is this a outside wall ? Is there unfinished attic space above ?

Interior wall. The attic is unfinished and there is fairly good access up there.

Then it should be a snap to run your wire in the walls up into the attic space and then down to your speaker and TV locations from your rack. You can drill holes in the top plate and fish the wires.

That is the plan. The only slight problem is the second fire break half way up the wall. We need one of those 4' long drill bits and we might need to cut out the drywall above or below the second cross 2x4 to make the run.
