View Full Version : Velodyne VX-10 or VRP-10?
lwright84 03-30-09, 09:34 AM Two separate sellers in my area are selling their Velodyne PSW. I could really use a littlle guidance in this area. I'm on a pretty tight budget, and am only picking up components as I get good deals (I just got a pair of Polk Monitor 40's for $55 each!). Anyway..
The VRP-10 is asking $175, and the mfctr date is 11-2006
The VX-10 is asking $120, and the mfctr date is 07-2008.
Both claim to be in impeccable condition.
A few things then:
1. I will be offering lower amounts for both, but lets assume for a second I can get them for the same price. Which one would be the best purchase then?
2. Lets assume the price ratios remains the same.. is the VRP-10 worth the extra money?
3. Both claim they can demo the unit for me, is their anything subwoofer-in-general or Velodyne-brand specific that I need to keep an eye\ear out for before purchasing. I know the basic basics, but I am still new at this hobby\passion\addiction.
I cant seem to find a spec sheet on the VRP-10 (only the 1000) so I cant really compare those details like I want to. I'd really appreciate your guys' speedy input as I dont know how long these deals will be available.
Thanks as always
I wouldn't get neither. There are better deals out there on brand new subs. What will be your primarily usage for the sub? Is it for primarily for HT or music? Either way, I would the tSc ASW-10 from The Speaker Company. It's $150 shipped. If you're on a tighter budget, get the ASW-8, which is only $99 shipped. Also, they have 30 trial and free return shipping if you don't like it. Great deal, especially considering the return shipping included, if you ask me! This speaker should be similar to the Energy ESW series.
I have heard the VX-10 personally in my friend's room against the BIC H-100. It's not bad for music, but you'll hear a lot of port noise if you feed it enough low tone bass in movies. If I was you, I would step your budget up a notch so you won't regret later wondering if you could have gotten a better sub.
mikeloxlong 03-30-09, 02:25 PM good afternoon sir. I would like to say one thing regarding bass. DO NOT SKIMP
That being said, buy the BIGGEST and BADDEST sub you can afford, period.
WAF (does it need to pass this requirement?)
Price (budget)
Performance (how low do you want it to go?)
I went from a supposed 230 watt HTiB subwoofer to a 100watt VX-10 to now an eD A2-300 and the improvement in the amount of bass is exponential. HTiB wasn't bad, muddied up a lot of sounds but at least it was loud. the VX-10 was definitely an improvement but still not the lows that I was craving and finally, just got my eD and I'm loving it but it still hasn't satiated my high output of low bass addiction (Infrasonic I believe is what these bassheads call it). I gotta stop dikking around with entry level stuff and just get quality right off the bat. At least that way, it cures a bit of upgraditis! :)
hopefully this helped you out...
ps. I'm also in the same situation regarding a new receiver but I will post my reply to that thread :)
The VRP-10 is probably a VRP-1000. They are very similar subs, I doubt you'll notice any difference except for appearance. $175 is too much for a used VRP-1000/VX-10. $125 might be ok if the seller has a receipt (2 yr warranty) so you'll have some warranty to work with.
For $175 you might be able to find a VRP-1200 or a DPS-10, which are both far superior, along with other options.
I would offer $100 for the VX-10 and see what happens if you have modest needs. If you can swing the $175 number there are better subs to be had that are significant upgrades.

I'll be using it primarily for HT. I have very realistic expectations here.. I'm on a very tight budget atm, and $150 for a sub is too much. I'm making do with what I can get on the budget I can afford. Right now I'm using an Altec Lansing 5.1 computer speaker setup (25W 6" PSW, has the speaker inputs on the back) via the TV's RCA audio out using RCA-to-3.5mm cable to the sub's auxillary input. I have since replaced the 5 9W AL satellites with two Polk Monitor 40's, but Im still using the same setup. I am trying to get a receiver (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1107123) and a decent sub so I can have a decent, REAL, 2.1 setup (for now). I appreciate your input, but I think these are some of the best deals I'm going to find on my budget and while my setup certainly wont be getting any fanfare around here.. it will certainly be miles ahead of anything I've ever had before. :)

The WAF is simply budgetary.. she couldn't care less what it looks like, where its put in the living room, or how loud it is (except in a positive way!). We have other things going on now, so I'm simply trying to do the best I can and get the best deals I can to make the best out of what we have (first home = first home theater!). When the times comes that we have a true HT room, you can bet I'll be much more interested in the bigger, badder subs. That being said, I really think one of these Velo 10"s IS the biggest, baddest sub I can afford. I just want to know which is a better use of my money. I foresee it lasting for at least 4-5 years, and I can always buy a second one to step things up until I get that magical HT room :) Price is roughly the $100 sweet spot.. give or take 10-20.
Slare:
Ya the Velo rep in the 'offical support thread' confirmed that it is a VRP-1000 even though it says VRP-10 on the amp. He also said that the VRP-1000 is expired and lives on in the VX-10.. and that they are identical (save for cosmetic appearances). The weird thing about that to me is that the spec sheets show two different values for some of the important sets:
VX-10:
150W Dyn
100W RMS
Freq: 36-120hz
VRP-1000:
170W Dyn
115W RMS
Freq: 35-140hz
Seems to me a 2 year old VRP-1000 might be better than a 6 month old VX-10. Idk, thats why Im here. I think I'm going to offer each of them $75 and see who's willing to take $90 + me making the whole drive to pick it up. :)
lwright84 03-31-09, 02:46 PM So in negotiating a deal on a Polk CS1 center channel (timbre matched to my recently purchased Monitor 40's I mentioned), a guy offered me a package deal on the CS1 plus a KLH 10" 150w PSW for $100 flat. Even though KLH is not an audiophile brand, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to find a better deal than that.
lwright84 04-01-09, 08:20 AM Well if anyone cares.. and I see that so many of you do.. I ended up getting the aforementioned deal. Polk CS1 center channel (timbre-matched to my Monitor 40 fronts) and the KLH ASW10-120 PSW for $100 flat total. No grinding or tearing (knock on wood!).
lwright84 07-31-09, 07:20 PM Just an update, I ended up getting a BIC Venturi V1020 160W sub for $80 a few weeks later. My house has despised me ever since. The KLH was muddy and boomy and made the viewing experience undesirable except ONLY during action sequences (it would rumble during ANYTHING it seemed no matter the dial settings).
