View Full Version : Newb: New Reciever too much for old HTIB Sub?

I have an old sub leftover from my HTIB that has not been replaced yet. Everything else from the HTIB has been replaced. The sub sounded fine with the old system, War of the Worlds and Master and Commander sounded loud and bassy (probably not good bassy, but bassy none the less).

It still outputs bass loud enough when I feed an HD or BD through the HK 247, but it sounds horrible when there is a "good" bass scene. Just watched the Bolt BD twice over the weekend and in the parts where there should be a nice low bass output it sounded like garbage. I've had to turn the volume knob almost all the way down to Min and there are still parts where it does not sound right at all.

The HK 247 is set to output the LFE only (all of my speakers are set to Small) and I can't change that value. Crossover is at 80.

Just wanted to confirm (or at least likely confirm) that the cheap sub is being overmatched by the new AVR. Any ideas on how to get through a few more months before I can pick up a new sub? Just leave the volume low?

Also, is that sound I'm hearing the sub bottoming out? I researched "bottoming out" and "blown sub" on the forum, but what I read didn't sound like what is happening to this sub. Just curious.

I seriously doubt any HTIB sub will handle bolt effectively. There is some very wicked bass in that movie, I have two subs in a small room with a total of almost 3K watts, and it is awesome. Literally makes the your hair and pants flop around.
Once you realize you have a great LFE disc, but a pusillanimous sub, your only option is to lower the LFE on the receiver. Unfortunately for a lot of bass enthusiasts some of these newer movies are going to separate the wheat from the chaff. Look for the thread about how KFP lets you know you have a weak sub.
Not trying to sound elitist, but these movies will really test the equipment. And a lot will fail. Headroom is EVERYTHING.

Thanks, looks like I'll just suffer until I find money in the budget to upgrade!
