Excerpt:

"Sharp and Sony are going ahead with a new LCD manufacturing joint venture, to be known as Sharp Display Products. This entity will come to life on April 1 and will be capitalized to the tune of 66% by Sharp and 34% by Sony.

What you may not have heard is that Sony is also talking to LG Display (LGD) about sourcing 32-inch, 37-inch, and 42-inch LCD panels for Bravia TVs for the 2nd half of 2009. According to a story in the Korea Times, testing is already under way at Sony of LGD’s current S-IPS offerings in those panel sizes."

In these economic times it's not surprising to see mergers and acquisitions, sell offs and to even abandon a particular market to try and become stronger to weather the storm.

Sony spent huge amounts of money on the PS3 and promoting Blu-ray, but neither have taken off like they were counting on. A few years ago I would have said you were crazy if you told me that Sony and Sharp would be joining forces in the tv business...with Sharp being the dominant player..but these days anything is possible.

It is now highly unlikely that Sony will be able to afford to make the huge investment that would be required for them to develop and manufacture large screen OLED sets. Sony is starting to look like they are now the GM of flat panels.

Sony's changing fortunes are pretty hard to believe. When I was growing up (I'm 32) Sony was the high-quality brand. They commanded a price premium and people bought their stuff because it was good. They created a market with the Walkman, the Trinitron sets were a major brand, and with Playstation and PS2 they were dominating the video game console industry.

Now we see they're gonna be buying their panels from Sharp & LG, they completely missed the boat on MP3 players, and the PS3 is languishing in 3rd place. Between Minidisc, Memory Stick, UMD, and Bluray they have struggled with high priced exclusive formats.

What is your point. April 1st is the beginning of a calendar quarter, so that may have something to do with the starting date. Why on earth would April 2nd make a better starting date?

I don't think he meant any harm by it. I believe all he was getting at is that its April Fool's day and so forth...

Perhaps, but April fools day, is an tradition from Ireland and the British Isles, that was brought over to the US by emigrants. I doubt if it has gained much purchase in Japanese culture. Still, with the new global economy, where you can find Irish Pubs in Tokyo, and even Irish Traditional music being played by Japanese musicians, anything is possible.

I despise those who falsely shout fire in a crowded theater, and if Noam thinks that those people should be allowed to do so, then I also despise him.:D

An April 1st classic from 1957, for your viewing pleasure.
