I had to have my receiver worked on a couple of weeks ago, so I had to unhook EVERYTHING. not fun, today I got my receiver back and started reconnecting EVERYTHING.

All is well except the dvd player. can't get any signal from it. I thought maybe problem with the receiver. I hooked it directly to the tv and still nothing. no blue light, no sound, no picture. I do get video/audio with composite. haven't tried component. what gives?

You may have killed your HDMI port when you unplug the cable with the DVD player on. Your faulty receiver may have killed your DVD player's HDMI port. Your TV HDMI port may be bad or may not support the particular resolution of your DVD player (like 1080p). The cable could be bad. Try resetting the DVD player by unplugging the player from the wall for 10 min. Try resetting the HDMI resolution to 480p by viewing the menu via composite (yellow plug) on your TV and then reconnect. Try to connect the DVD player to the TV with both being off, turn on DVD player first with DVD in it which should autoplay, and then turn on TV after that which should sync to your DVD player's resolution.

I will try these. The tv port is fine, its the one the receiver was hooked up to and worked fine with my directv. The cables and reciever ports are fine, I swapped cables and connections with dvd and directv to the reciever.

I doubt the reciever damaged the dvd port, the problem with the reciever was a frontpanel display issue.

Thanks for the reply. I'll try the rest tomorrow.

I can't figure out how to make my dvd player output 1080i via component. TV says it's getting 480p. I bought this about two years ago and remember it being a pita to get 1080i via HDMI. now my hdmi doesn't work. I think I damaged the port, or maybe something internal when moving components. Before I send it in to be worked on, I wanted to know if I can get the same quality with component and optical. Can somebody help me with the settings.

It is currently connected directly to a Sony XBR1 via component. I want to hook it back to my Yamaha V661. (it's to the tv now to isolate the avr for troubleshooting)

(P.S. Trust me, I have a Sony NC85H but don't have enough free HDMI inputs on my TV so I use component @ 480p)

I'm not sure you can get 1080i via component cables. Many DVD players can only upconvert DVD's over a HDMI and component is limited to 480p.

I second Huey's idea about changing the HDMI resolution in the setup menu and re-trying the HDMI connection. Try a couple different forced resolutions to see if it will reset the output.

As I said before, I remember setting this up the first time and was a royal pain. I don't really like the interface, it's too confusing.

I've reset the settings. I've changed the resolution while connected via component and checked back with HDMI. I get nothing each time. I believe the HDMI is gone. is it worth having somebody look at it?

I'm very uninspired by the 480p, seems a waste with my TV. not sure if I want to spend another ~100 bucks for a upconverting dvd player, or suck it up and finally buy a PS3. I like having the changer, but can give that up.

To be honest, I don't see much difference on my TV (Sony A2020 SXRD) between it upconverting 480p component from the NC85 or the NC85 upconverting over HDMI. As for having it looked at...its probably not worth it. Put it on eBay or Craigs List and disclose it may have a bad HDMI output. Somebody will buy it just for its component output, which is about equivalent to the previous model NC80.

If you interested in selling the changer and getting the PS3, send me a PM with an offer. Shipping can be a bear though. I can't do a lot, but I can use the changer as a backup for a Children's Waiting room. I've fixed 2 of the current changers already when the spindle motors went south, but thes players run 50-60+ hours a week so who knows how long these puppies will last.

Im 40 and ive been messing with electronics and stuff most of my live, i think ive seen just about every plug under the sun. I see this HDMI plug being a problem already. IMO its a bad design

Its a small plug but there are to many pins and they all seem to be needed to work properly.

Another plug i think is bad is SATA for hard drives.

Agreed. HDMI port is very sensitive. You can short out the HDMI by messing with the cable when it's on. I always turn my player and TV off before unplugging or plugging any HDMI cables.
