I was browsing one of my sites I find things at and noticed someone decided to remux the famed Supertramp Crime of the Century album into a DVD A MLP 5.1 mix. Granted he was quite straight in letting everyone one know that this was done from a stereo recording and he goes on to explain the equipment and process he uses to turn this into a 5.1 recording at 24/96.

I decided to take the 15 plus hours to obtain this and hear what this would sound like I was able to finally burn it onto a dvd. I plopped it into my dvda player and wow was I impressed. Granted its not remastered in the way studios do these but in all honesty it is pretty darn good. Nice and clean with good surround. I had to bring down the surrounds a bit as it tended to be a little hot. But there was good surround from left to right in the rear not to mention front to back. Vocals were placed in the center for the most part.

There was very good discreet surround taking place and the overall sonic value was tasteful. So if you are a Supertramp fan and you want to get a hold of this then poke your head around the web, its out there.

I found several upmixes for that album. Is it the one that's 2.47gb's?

Supertramp is one of those bands I always thought would sound great in hirez 5.1 - great shame there has been no back catalog treatment.

Please, please, me too! I've had this recording on 8-track (really), cassette, Mobile Fidelity Master Recording vinyl and MFMR CD. If it comes out on anything in the future, I'll have that too!

Have no idea, but would suspect it would be a very expensive venture. Something I have no knowledge of. If it was easy and in-expensive we wouldn't be held captive by the companies on what we as far as SACD's/DVD-A's go.

Thanks to The_Nephilim1 for the PM/link. It took nearly two days to download and I attempted to burn to DVD. Record Now opened up and prompted me to rip it to DVD which I did, but it won't play. I also tried dvd decrypter but couldn't get it to work. What are the steps needed to burn this file?

Thanks!

iso-burner.

I down loaded iso-burner and iso-burned two more coasters. I get to 90% and it says burn error. Are there specific settings to use? Sorry, but I'm totally new to this kind of thing, I just want to hear Supertramp in 5.1.

Thanks for the tip Scooterdog. I remeber when the UHQR vinyl disc came out with this recording from Mobile Fidelity but I was too poor to buy it at the time. The recording does sound good although the volume level of the surrounds is a little high for my preferences. Great effort and much approciated from its creator.

Those having problems should try ImageBurn software. Its free and I've found it to be very reliable for burning discs. Remember to not burn at high speeds and use quality media and I doubt you'll have problems.

Your very welcome...Yes the surrounds are a bit hot but that was an easy fit. For those having problems burning it I think someone mentioned IMGBURN, thats what I use and used it on this and it worked with no problems.

Glad I found this little gem for us all to enjoy.

I downloaded IMGBURN and am still getting a burn error. I'm starting to believe I have a bad DVD drive. I'm going to load everything onto a portable hard drive and see if I can burn it at work. Otherwise, if there are any special settings to use beyond the 'stock' settings, please somebody let me (and others) know what they are.

Try Active Isoburner and use a speed of 8 or lower. This is an Iso download.

Havnt got DVD Audio yet, waiting for the Oppo 83, but it sounded pretty impressive in a standard DVD player outputting DTS 5.1.

Burned fine with Nero Burning Rom, just go to Recorder/Burn Image and select .iso file.

Thanks for the link.

Wow Thanks alot! I only just skipped around to see if it worked. Sounds pretty good for someone who did it at home.

Just thought I'd pipe up and mention that the link for this was easy to find today via Google, probably due to lots of folks activating it recently.

heh heh.

Anyway, sounds pretty good. I wonder whether the Penteo solution is similar in net results to these home-brewed 5.1 upmixes, or whether the Penteo solution is targeting a different final result. So John, if you're reading, let us know if you've done any private comparisons... :D

Thanks for the info. I agree overall surround mix is nice, some strange isolation on certin instruments like the bell sounds in the center channel on School. Anyway thanks for the link, I am curious have you ever downloaded the DVD audio version of Wish You Were Here, from that site? If so is it worth it? I downloaded Aqualung ans was not to impressed.

I have the WYWH brew you speak of. It's ok but not up to the quality of the Supertramp COTC remux. I believe it was taken from the SQ version that was released which I happen to have but nothing to play it back on :( any longer. I to DL the Aqualung but I went in understanding this was taken from a Quad 8 track and not the CD4 recording, which I also have. Ok I'm dating myself, but I must have about 80 or so quad vinyl recordings sitting in a plastic container. I keep telling myself to get a hold of an old Sansui quad receiver just never seemed to get around to it though. O well one day.

Dont worry about dating yourself I am right there with you! The problem with Aqualung is that the drums are barely audible. I am just looking around the site are there any other Super Audio mixes that are good? I saw Led Z, Physical Graffiti?

Thanks, and thanks to all for the PM's. I finally got a good burn by slowing down to 8 speed.

It's been an interesting listen with the limited time I've had with it. Not as clean sounding as the mobile fidelity disc but overall not too bad. If there's anyone else that has the MoFi disc, does that version have the lowest recording level ever!? I can literally turn my system up as high as it will go and the quiet parts of the song are almost too low and the louder parts just reach the upper limits of what I care to listen to. Great dynamic range though. Good choices for 5.1 mix but as others have noted, pretty hot in the surrounds.

Good thing is, it got me to pop this back in for a listen after too many years collecting dust, & reminded me all over again why I loved this album so much!
