View Full Version : Best Concert on HD DVD?
Quentin2 04-01-09, 02:34 AM I've got about 12 concert discs and finally getting around to watch them. Thought the Eagles and Chicago/EW&F and Santana discs were amazing but was just floored by The Moody Blues: Lovely To See You Live.
I really didn't expect much, most bands with 40+ years under their belts are looking a little bored and tired but The Moody Blues still rock out like it's 1980!
There are 20 songs with not a lame one in the bunch. The video quality is better than any other concert disc I've seen so far and the audio is right up there as well. Most important, the band was cookin' that night and the live audience was in to the show.
So many great songs but I have to say "Isn't Life Strange" was the standout with many others not too far behind. Thanks to everyone involved for such a great disc!
So what is your favorite concert?
EDIT: Updated list of Concerts mentioned so far and number of votes:

webphilosopher 04-01-09, 04:36 AM We have played "The Moody Blues: Lovely To See You Live" over and over again. If it were a record, it would be worn out. Since the concert starts up right away, it took me a while to realize we could choose the TrueHD option. That one disc would be enough reason to keep our HD DVD player.
hconwell 04-01-09, 08:46 AM That one disc would be enough reason to keep our HD DVD player. Those are precisely my sentiments regarding "Eagles Farewell I". I have two copies of it and am wearing it out on my 3 active players.
Never been a huge Moody Blues fan ... but I guess I should check this out.
hernanu 04-01-09, 01:29 PM Heart is my favorite, closely followed by EW&F/Chicago.
I saw Queen the same tour as the "Queen: Rock Montreal & Live Aid" was recorded and watched "Live Aid" live, so it brings back great memories! I still get goosebumps when I watch Freddie having the crowd all going in unison at the Live Aid show. Nobody can work a stage any better than him. RIP Freddie!!
Eagles: Farewell Tour is also awesome!!
Toto: 25th Anniversary is also a favorite of mine.
I too, have never been a big fan of the Moody Blues, but will check it out.
On the other hand, I was very disappointed in "Deep Purple: Live in Montreux". I thought it was a horrible concert.(lead singer was not good) Just my opinion though.
I have the "Heart" concert on SDDVD and would definitely like to get it on HD if I can find it at a good price.
jeff1967 04-01-09, 07:32 PM Heart Alive in Seattle is very good in spite of having no LFE channel (it's 5.0).
The Wilson sisters were on top of their game for this one.
Also, Cream at the Royal Albert Hall was a pleasant suprise. Not being a huge Cream fan, my expectations were low. This is an excellent show IMHO!:)
eapleitez 04-03-09, 09:04 PM Let's not forget about NIN: Besides You in Time.
Heart is my favorite, closely followed by EW&F/Chicago.
I totally agree, although I like the Earth, Wind, and Fire part of the concert more than the Chicago part ;)
Third favorite for me is Song Remains The Same. It would be #1 if they had gotten rid of those silly dream sequences.
gluvhand 04-04-09, 10:20 AM Motorhead's Stage Fright is my current favorite.
Maestro J 04-04-09, 04:23 PM Is Eagles Farewell Tour HD DVD the only concert HD DVD not available in BD also?
webdev511 04-04-09, 06:56 PM Let's not forget about NIN: Besides You in Time.
+1 has awesome concert look and sound stage. When I watch it, I FEEL like I'm there.
davcole 04-07-09, 09:03 AM Has anyone seen the Pat Metheny Group Concert HD DVD- THE WAY UP?
allargon 04-07-09, 09:07 AM I own Queen, Nine Inch Nails, Robbie Williams, Heart plus many Opus Arte titles. I hate to say it, but the best one in terms of PQ is R. Kelly. (The AQ ain't bad. I like his music, so that also adds to it being my favorite.)
The worst disc without a doubt is the Method Man disc. (Great music--lousy AQ, lousy PQ)
there is no doubt that Roy Orbison's" Black and White night", is it for me.
davcole 04-08-09, 12:51 AM I formerly had EWF/ Chicago but I ended up getting it on BD for the lossless track. It was a good HD DVD and probably the only one that let me hit RESUME. The video is equivalent from what I can tell, however the lossy DD+ wasn't enough for me as I needed lossless so I upgraded to the BD. Had they stuck a TRUEHD track on the HD DVD i'd have kept it.
hakstone 04-08-09, 10:46 AM +1 has awesome concert look and sound stage. When I watch it, I FEEL like I'm there.

I don't own this title and never really thought about getting it ... until now. Just ordered it ;)
ti-triodes 04-08-09, 08:01 PM I have the NIN HD DVD sampler, which is great. I'll have to get the full disc.
Has anyone seen the Pat Metheny Group Concert HD DVD- THE WAY UP?
Yes, note it's 1080i, so my de-interlaced screenshots may not be the best:

Without question, Eagles Farewell 1 Tour for me! As soon as it comes out on Blu (providing the quality is the same) I will be selling my HD-A30.

Same here. Of course, the concert is so good I would have bought it even if there were no such thing as High Def.

Leterface 04-16-09, 08:47 PM Is Eagles Farewell Tour HD DVD the only concert HD DVD not available in BD also?I think Cream is also not available in BD. And ofcourse my vote goes for Cream.
laugsbach 04-18-09, 04:05 PM Without question, Eagles Farewell 1 Tour for me!
I agree...
Gixxxerman001 04-19-09, 09:45 PM motorhead's stage fright is my current favorite.
+1
The Cream show is a close 2nd and the Eagles 3rd for me..
Reginald Trent 04-25-09, 02:02 PM Chicago/Earth, Wind & Fire Live At The Greek.
jeffden 05-16-09, 10:42 AM I have most of those listed so far, but my favorite is Heart, Alive in Seattle followed by Chicago/EWF and then the Eagles and NIN very closely.
Just got and watched the Eagles disc. Cranked the Onkyo 805 to push the big DefTechs and it was the best thing yet to happen to me in HD! Was once front row at an Edgar Winter concert and this was ten times better.
Can only say this is the best so far... I thought concerts via the dish were great. Maybe so, but we need adjectives for what lies beyond great because this is so much better.
Can't wait to get more concert disks!
allargon 05-17-09, 10:29 PM I see the OP skipped the classic music stuff like Mahler and the Opus Arte titles.
For me, it's
#1) R. Kelly
#2) Heart
#3) Nine Inch nails
#5) Robbie Williams (UK import)
#5) Queen

I've been trying to update the first post with favorites of posters here. I did get your vote on R. Kelly. Have I missed something, if so I'll add it. I could add Robbie Williams as mentioned.
carledwards 05-18-09, 01:03 AM Santana, Hymns for Peace. Amazing band assembled for that concert and superb sound.
Quentin2 05-18-09, 02:59 AM Thanks for that vote, carledwards! I'm very glad to see that wonderful Santana concert finally get a vote.
List updated...
Brassua 05-23-09, 09:19 PM My favorite is none other then The Moody Blues: Lovely To See You Live.

Excellent choice!
PioManiac 05-28-09, 05:14 PM +1 Eagles Farewell Tour I.
by far my most played disc of all time,
I should probably order a second one for backup , just in case something happens to this one. <knock on wood>
I spent $450 for a pair of tickets in the nose bleed seats in March to see them live, (Long Road Out Of Eden Tour)
and although it was a great show, the sound and picture quality at home was far superior!
I'd much rather watch the concert at home where my large comfy powered recliners are the front row seats
and sitting 10' away from a 120" screen is almost like being in the front row of a concert (for a fraction of the cost).

My second most played HD DVD is my G/F's favorite
a Tribute to James Taylor (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/29/taylorjames_musicares.html)

I've also got about 20 concerts on Blu
...and Front Row VIP seats to all of those too :D
pacpisces 05-29-09, 03:04 AM I was wondering when someone might mention the James Taylor one. I love the Dixie Chix song, Carole Kings song, and of course I love Fire & Rain sang by Mr. Taylor. I would say it is my 2nd favorite one behind the Eagles. Referring to another poster, I prefer Chicago over EWF. So my order(that I own) of hd dvds would be
1. Eagles Melbourne
2. Tribute to James Taylor
3. Cream
4. Chicago/EWF
I have Queen which is great two concerts, but in blu-ray. Other than that the only other music related hd dvd would be a view from space that has all the great composers playing where you can pick from eight different audio composer compilation tracks and view the earth from space. Warning, it is good for audio, but the video sucks.
Quentin2 05-29-09, 01:17 PM List updated again. The Eagles have flown to #1.
Got Eagles this week, very impressive on all levels. Thanks!
+1 has awesome concert look and sound stage. When I watch it, I FEEL like I'm there.
I've been to several NIN concerts going back to the pretty hate machine tour.
This hd-dvd release is the closest you will ever get to actually being there and unless you had really good seats it's better.
Truly excellent.
davcole 06-25-09, 06:21 AM I totally agree, although I like the Earth, Wind, and Fire part of the concert more than the Chicago part ;)
I had this one on HD DVD but I had to get the BD cause of the lossless DTSMA track which is a noticable upgrade. It still a great sounding HD DVD though.
peterdavid10 07-10-09, 06:54 PM Another vote for The Eagles concert, fantastic video and audio.
Cheers
Peter
Quentin2 07-11-09, 12:36 AM Thanks, list updated again. The Eagles are flying high!
TheGuyInTheChair 07-15-09, 03:00 AM either nine inch nails or deep purple
Samfield 07-16-09, 03:38 PM Another vote for the Eagles...
I personally love HD concerts on both formats...but 3 of my favorites, Eagles, Cream and JT are still not on Blu. Glad I held onto my HD-DVD players.
Add me to the Eagles list! I finally unwrapped my months-old copy a few weekends ago, and was blown away by it. From reading thru this thread, might pick up a few more concert videos, if I can find a good deal on the HD DVD versions.
Question - HighDefDigest review mentions a dts 5.1 soundtrack (regular dts since no hi-def codes was mentioned), but my Onkyo was showing it as the dts HD Master Audio signal. Was this a misprint?
Quentin2 08-03-09, 09:20 PM A couple more votes for The Eagles added and one for Deep Purple: Live At Montreux 2006 (which was unmentioned before).
craftech 08-04-09, 09:24 AM Hands down, the Eagles concert in every respect gets my number one vote. I have most of the others to compare it to.
John
Magmatic 08-04-09, 04:30 PM Best/Favorite concert HD-DVD. This wasn't as easy for me as I initially thought. Mainly because I broke the titles up into two components, technical and emotional impact. Then the combo of both rules the day. My vote goes-
1. Moody Blues
2. Eagles
3. Heart
4. EWF/Chicago
I don't know why, but I heard differences between DD+ and DD TrueHD on Lovely to See You. DD TrueHD in my setup was much preferred (I felt it had a more realistic balance). I expected to hear no differences, but that didn't happen. The TrueHD allowed Moody to slip past the DTS HD-Master Audio Eagles Live in Melbourne Farewell 1 Tour. Ann and Nancy were tight in their set, but the audio (technical) component was a step down from the Moody/Eagles discs. The DD+ of the EWF/Chicago discs was often pleasing enough, but sometimes the renditions of songs (notably some of the Chicago tracks) left the emotional impact lower than the others.
I only add BD concert discs to my collection now, so I probably won't change my list above even if I acquire some that are duplicated on each format. There would be no way for me to know that the same mastering/mixing was used for each format to make a valid choice.
wildchild22 08-05-09, 08:15 AM Alice Cooper live at the montreaux gets my vote!
Available on HD-DVD and blu
Eagles gets my vote since its not available on BD that I know of. So a must for HD DVD and Eagles fans.
My two favorites are --
Toto: 25th Anniversary
Heart: Alive in Seattle
I picked up the Toto concert on a whim. I wasn't even a fan. That changed just a few minutes into the concert.
Quentin2 08-05-09, 12:54 PM Updates added...
Magmatic, I agree with everything you said. Great post!
gixx1000 08-05-09, 04:56 PM NIN definitely gets my vote. It's also the only disc I have ever played on my system at reference volume. The PQ is better than the 1080i Bluray version, and the AQ is top notch. It begs you to play it loud.
ericpizzapie 08-06-09, 02:16 PM On a side note and just for fun. The DTS Audio Demo Disc has a one track Pixies performance of "Debaser" that is great! The promo says that a Pixies HD DVD will be out soon on Eagle Rock. Boy that would've been awesome. Maybe a Blu release though? Here's hoping.
hainer36 08-10-09, 03:03 PM Vote for Motorhead. I've seen em live once, in '08 and that was an amazing experience, and that was at the back of the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto, now I get to see the mole and handle-bars on Lemmy's face with this HD-DVD and I LOVE IT!
Mickey Dee's solo is one of the best drum solo's I've ever heard and with the HD audio its even better.
there is no doubt that Roy Orbison's" Black and White night", is it for me.
Very nice. All star group backing up Orbison. Also now avail on Blu-ray.

That's one well recorded sound track ,clean great separation of the channels you can almost feel like you're there, I had rented this first and was floored ran out to buy it, and I'm not the biggest Roy O fan.
I'm going to pop this one in when I get home.

My vote goes to Nine Inch Nails - Beside You In Time
Michael9009 12-30-09, 02:22 AM Just watched the Eagles Farewell Tour on HD DVD tonight. Nothing could be better. I love this concert! :D
Brian81 12-30-09, 12:42 PM My favorites are the Heart, Orbison, and Motorhead ones. :)
Oh...forgot about the Queen, too. I bought that one on BD the first time around so I didn't think about it being on both formats.

I liked yes live in montreaux, though it is true that this good performance can`t be compared to the energy of the songs performed on the albums.
Brian81 01-01-10, 07:26 PM I liked yes live in montreaux, though it is true that this good performance can`t be compared to the energy of the songs performed on the albums.
I didn't find this performance to be as good as the House of Yes one a few years earlier. Judging by both of these, they are pretty tame live.
maybe they were younger and had more energy then. the fragile album from which many of the songs are included in the montreux concert, sounds incredibly energetic and powerful on the cd. it is almost non comparable.
Ok, this disc has to be mentioned, even though it is not at the overall quality level of any of the more recent releases. I'm talking about the Jimi Hendrix Live at Monterey disc from the UK. The image quality is what you would expect from a 1967 concert - grainy, and probably no better than a VHS tape in many ways. The audio quality was quite good to me, really nothing to complain about.
But where this has to score significant bonus points is on the historical impact of this disc. This was the first concert that Hendrix appeared in the US following his explosion in the UK, and he went straight up from here. I really enjoyed the extra feature that included "Stone Free" - this is crappy audio quality, but I swear there's a guy in the background just in awe of Hendrix, and it looks like a Pete Townshend clone to me!
Anyway, this shouldn't be at the top of any list, but I have played this 3 times already, and even with my wife getting me the Complete Monterey Pop Festival that includes this concert, I'll be keeping the HD DVD.
Deep Purple: Live At Montreux 2006
I saw this one and I am a Deep Purple fan so here is my vote :)
cws_kahuna 01-26-10, 03:14 PM NIN.
Off the top of my head NIN may be the only concert HD DVD I have (I already had the Eagles on DVD and that is a great one too, maybe someday I will upgrade it). I do have several Blu-Ray concert discs and I feel the NIN HD DVD has an overall PQ and AQ that I have yet to see matched.
Pseudotrue 02-04-10, 06:32 PM Finally got "The Eagles" disc... Amazing!!! That's all i can say. It is fantastic. I actually got for under $10 at Newbury comics on a trip to Boston... was shocked to see it and so happy to have it!
