Hello, I have not found exactly what i'm looking for in a search so hopefully this is the right place to ask this? I have Cox digi cable with a Motorola DCH 3416 DVR and would like to hook up an outboard hd dvd recorder to save some High Def shows that I have saved on the boxes H/D but the 1394 fire wire port on the box is enabled but not active. I am curious is there a way to activate it in the service menu, Or is this a firmware (headend) deal? I was under the assumption that the firewire ports should be useable due to Gov. regulation.
Thanks for any help that may be offered.
Steve

See How to record via IEEE 1394 (Firewire) to Windows XP (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=403695)

The firewire should be enabled by default. If you can see the diagnostics saying it is enabled but not active, that means it is enabled but not able to communicate with the other device.

I have a DCH3200 (non-DVR). I was able to connect it to a JVC DVHS deck and record HD movies/shows.

I admit I just glanced at this post but quickly lost interest when in bold print I read that it was for live programming only and for windows. I have saved program material and want to use a dvd or vhs recorder to record saved programming off of my dvr. Did I miss something else in the 165ish pages of that thread?
Thanks

I never found a "live" versus "recorded" limitation. I have dumped many HDTV programs to my computer from my DVR.

IAC, this thread seems to have the best info on 1394 ports.

ThanksIt is live in the sense that you record as it is played (no file transfers), but you can certainly copy recorded programs from local channels as they are played. The with exception would be channels (namely FOX) that carry the broadcast flag on some systems. Manufacturers are allowed to ignore the broadcast flag, but Motorola does not.

If you want a DVR that actually allows you to download recorded files to your computer, then see my signature.
