View Full Version : HDMI Splitting to Plasma & Projector...

I'm having an issue splitting an HDMI signal to go to either my 720p Plasma TV or my 1080p projector. Due to the TV being lower resolution, I dropped the setting down on my test devices to 720p for now.

Ultimately the splitter will leave from the OUT jack of my Onkyo TX-SR606, for now I just have it plugged right into my Sony PS3's HDMI out for testing purposes.

The devices: The projector is an Epson Powerlite 1080. The TV is a Panasonic 50" 720p Plasma. The splitter is a very basic 1F/2M HDMI splitter sold on ebay (looks identical to the one on monoprice). Passive, not powered.

When I plug just the projector OR the TV into one of the splitter's 2 OUTs, I can get a handshake and nice pic on either device. However, once I plug them both in, I can't seem to get the projector running. That's got a 25' cable running to it. The TV only has a 6' cable.

I have tried power cycling everything fresh, and do not wish to run both projector AND plasma at the same time, ever. Still, as soon as I plug two devices into the splitter, the projector will no longer get the signal, even with the Plasma off.

Am I missing a step, or do I just need a better splitter? A powered one maybe? I am not looking to spend big bucks on a splitter, and only care about getting to one of these two devices, one at a time.

If anyone has any thoughts I'd love to hear -- I noticed monoprice does have a powered 1 in, 2 out HDMI box for a reasonable cost that I may try once they come back in stock, if anyone thinks a powered splitter will make a difference.

Thanks.

definitely start with a powered splitter. Or get an HDMI switch if you don't need both on at once.

Thanks - I'll do that for sure then.

I'm using the monoprice non-powered splitter with two Samsung DLP sets, an HLP5674W (720p) and a HL61A750 (1080p).

When used with a DirecTV HR-20 DVR I get picture on both, but no sound on either. No idea why.

When used with a Panasonic BD35 Blu-Ray player, I get a lot of flashing screens as it tries to connect, but nothing works. No picture, no sound, just "check your cable" messages on the TVs. Might be that the BD35 has an automatic resolution feature that is freaking out on the two different TV resolutions, I don't know.

Since I just wanted to do a quick side-by-side comparison of the TVs before the old one goes away, I'm not going to bother with a powered splitter. Just letting others know the problems I'm having.

But if anyone has a solution, please let me know.

Well I ended up purchasing a cheap powered HDMI splitter, and the results are almost too good to be true...So naturally I am wondering what must be wrong. ;)

I have the small powered splitter box running out to my 720p Panasonic plasma, and a 1080p Epson projector. The "in" cable to the splitter box is coming from the "out" of my Onkyo 606 receiver (set to HDMI passthrough, so no scaling being done by the receiver).

I now can get a picture on all my sources on both the TV and projector - Hooray -- But here's the weird part -- My Xbox 360 and Sony PS3, both set to 1080p, are now giving a clean signal to my 720p TV!??! What the heck? How is that possible. I expected to have to turn them down to 720p when I wanted to use them on the plasma, but they are working fine now. What the heck?

Is there a way I can verify I am actually getting a true 1080p signal out of this splitter box? I imagine it has to be but maybe something is confusing the system somewhere along the way. My Epson projector says the resolution is getting is 1920 * 1080, is that definitely 1080p?

I guess I am just a skeptic, now the image is looking softer to me on the projector and I'm trying to determine if I am imagining it or if this splitter has somehow worsened my signal.

Help???

Doesn't the plasma automatically scale down anything fed to it anything over 720p? My mitsubishi projector does that even though the feed from the PS3 and the Dish DVR is 1080.

If you go directly from your 1080 source to your 720p TV without the splitter you will find that it works the same as with the splitter.

It also can not change the apparent sharpness. Digital signals either work perfectly or very badly (sparkles, dropouts, etc.). There's no subtle degradation.

Well considering I am getting a signal everywhere, I'd say this is success.

Guess I just never bothered trying sending 1080p to the 720p plasma so I asusmed it would not work. My bad.

Pretty great tho. Projector or plasma, best of both worlds.

Yes powered HDMI splitters are always the best and less problematic way to go. Everytime I see people buy the passive ones there are usually problems :(

I am trying to do somthing similar. I owuld like the HDMI signal to go wither to my 720p plasma in my family room or to my 720p projector out on my deck. My AVR has 2 zones and will take of the audio. and I use an IR to RF converter so that my remote will work on the deck.

My AVR in the family room is older and does not handle HDMI so I will also need something that accepts multiple inputs.

All you need is a powered 1x2 HDMI splitter.

There are many powered splitters with multiple inputs. 3x2, 4x2 or matrix 4x2.
