I have a friend who is having fan failure warnings on his refurb HD70. We've tried changing altitude settings as well as supplementing with additional cooling. He's looking into getting it replaced from the place he purchased it from, but if that fails he will have to send it in for repair.

Optoma said it would be $160 just to look at it, and they would put some of the cost back into the repairs, but if it's outrageous then he might as well upgrade. He wanted me to ask if anyone has had these issues, and any possible fixes, and how much the cost to repair could be.

Thanks

If you have no warranty left, open it up and get the part number right off the fan and then find it on the web. They are usually fairly easy to find and replace yourself. If that doesn't work, then the controller board is the problem and you will only be out a few dollars, not several hundred.

In all the cases of "fan failure" that I've seen on Infocus units, it was always the controller board. Actual fan failure is rare, an Infocus tech once told me they stocked up on fans for the X2 when it came out and they still have them.

I would not be surprised if the same were true with others.
