View Full Version : m2ts to mov container conversion?

I was wondering if there was a way to convert m2ts to mov without having to re-encode. I was under the impression that the formats (m2ts, mov, etc) were just containers around the codecs (h.264, mpeg-2, etc). If this is the case then wouldn't it be a lot quicker to just convert the file format. Tools such as 'Handbrake' seem as though they have to do an encode when performing the conversion. Is it possible to just convert the containers or am I missing something?

Thanks,
Tony

I think that's true with MPEG-4, but not with MPEG-2.

Try MPEG Streamclip. As far as I can tell there is no re-encode happening with it but I'll leave to others here to confirm that, or not.

Thanks for the responses. I may end up having to re-encode anyway. I was using Plex to view an m2ts file from that latest Indiana Jones movie and I was still getting hiccups even on my Mac Pro 8 core. Neither the CPU nor network were being pegged so I'm thinking maybe the application just can't handle the large amounts of data.
