In 2005 I purchased a Samsung 61" DLP TV that was the poster child for DLP TVs at the time. In 2007 I had the set replaced under my lemon warranty (I can't even remember what the problem was) and was given a replacement Mitsubishi Diamond WD-65735. I had the HDMI board go out on me and had it replaced, then I had the "blob" issue so they replaced my WD-65833 with a WD-73835.
Last week I had the projector replaced because I had an issue with a red Y pattern being seen at the center bottom of the screen which was visible in lighter scenes. I also have an issue with some dark specks on the screen. About 4 of them are at the bottom of the screen but one speck is smack dab in the middle of the screen. It is really only visible in white scenes or when playing the Wii up close to the screen. The Geek Squad tech tried to clean the specks but discovered they were actually inside the screen. He told me he would order me a new screen. I got a call from Geek Squad and was informed that they could not order me a new screen so my TV would have to be replaced.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but contrary to logic given this economy, the price of televisions, at least at Best Buy, seem to be going way up. I went to Best Buy today and they told me that they could not order me a new Mitsubishi because they are no longer selling them. So here are the options they have given me:
1) I can have the WD-73835 they have on display as a trade. I checked and it has 2700 hours on it.
2) I can have the display model of their Sharp AQUOS LC-65SE94U for $1500 off of the new price ($5999) and use credit for the price I paid for the Mitsubishi ($3500) towards purchase of the floor model. Basically I would have to pay an additional $1000 for the Sharp.
3) Use the $3500 credit to purchase any other television at Best Buy.
4) Use the $3500 credit to purchase a projector
My issues: I have a large room and I am afraid that buying a smaller TV will make me extremely disappointed. The only projector I would really want to purchase would be the Epson 6500UB and Best Buy does not carry it. The prices for good TVs at Best Buy are considerably more than $3500.
So I need some advice from the AVS community on what I should do.
