I have started a modest AV area in my living room. Unfortunately there are no basements to be had in California :-)

This is what she is looking like right now:

This is from the sofa directly across the room on the other wall. To the left you can see the glass door to the backyard. To the right you can see a fireplace. The room continues to the right as open floor plan to the kitchen.

The nook itself is 8' wide. The Salamander stand is 66 or 67" wide. There are 15" on either side of the stand for some tower speakers.

These are my ideas:
1) Buy the doors for the left and right compartments on the TV stand.
2) I am working on buying a set of used Def Tech BP2000 tower speakers and a Def Tech C/L/R 2002 center channel speaker. The center channel will go on the top shelf of the middle section of the TV stand. A set of Def Tech BPXs will go on the wall on the far side to make it 5.2. I think 7.1 is ipossible in this particular room.
3) I plan to get a Onkyo 607 to power the speakers. It will go in the right section of the TV stand.

Now the questions:

1) Does anyone have suggestions for some kind of black out for that sliding door? The verticle blinds just dont cut it.
2) Any ideas for something to dress the blank area up above the TV? It just seems bare.
3) The next big step is to install a drop down screen. I'd like to mount this in the ceiling above the nook and have the screen drop down in front of the TV. Anyone have suggestions for a screen no wider than 8' that is appropriate?

Please feel free to make suggestions, criticisms, etc!

Nice setup.

I would wall mount the TV, better for viewing, covers the wall space and makes room for a center channel.

Sliding glass door curtains? You can buy hotel quality black out curtains at places like Big Lots - cheap, cheap!!

Wall space behind the TV - you already have the exact right idea - a screen for Home Theater projection. Is the tv a flat screen that you can mount on the wall??

A 72inX96in screen would fill the "nook" and look giant - remember that buying nice expensive speakers will result in your having a TV with external speakers - spend less on a modest surround sound and get a projector and screen or get a projector and use the wall until you can afford the screen.

You will be so glad you added the option of Theater in the Home to your video entertainment choices.
Best of Luck
